I think I’d prefer Samuel over Porter, but I’d still like Ted Simmons the best.

I personally think Juan Samuel would be a great manager for the Pirates.

I really think they are giving it to Wedge, They are only interviewing Porter and Samuel because they have to. Personally I think Van Slyke is the man for the job.

msr71: Andy Van Slyke was a first base coach for 4 years, and was not this past year — instead, he sat home and wrote a book about the Cubs playing in the World Series. I’m with Ian_Smell – Ted Simmons needs to be brought in and interviewed before Florida or Seattle give him formal interviews.

Yeah, but I’m selfish as a M’s fan. I like the Pirates and want them to continue to make good decisions, but I’m hoping the M’s will realize that Ted Simmons would be a great choice and will hire him before the Pirates, Marlins, or anyone else gets the chance.
Still can’t believe the dude is 61 years old and still hasn’t gotten a shot at a full-time managing gig in MLB! Someone hire him(preferrably the M’s)!

I think you’re right. It would appear that it’s Wedge’s job to turn down at this point. I wonder if Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux would be a great fit as the Pirates manager. Has his name been mentioned for any of the coaching vacancies? Maddux might be the next Bud Black.

“Personally I think Van Slyke is the man for the job.”
Heh…it’s funny you mention that, because over at Bucs Dugout(a popular Pirates’ blog), someone else brought that up same suggestion.
The response from most people was laughter, with one person even mentioning that he thought that if Van Slyke were hired to be the manager, he’d likely try to challenge CF Andrew McCutchen to throw down over who was the better defender, bench McCutchen, and then go out in the field himself to prove his point.
And I don’t think the person who posted that was far off. Van Slyke is out there. And I mean wayyyyy ouuutttt there. 😉

Charlie Montoyo? May not be a fan of the Rays, but he’s been extremely impressive in his minor league career with them.

You hear that, Doug Melvin? There’s a manager who is actually interested in coming here! GET ON IT!

Realistically, it’s not going to matter who gets the job. The problems are at a higher level than the manager in the dugout. Until they get the issues sorted out in the front office, it’s a lost cause.

Are you talking about the Pirates or the Brewers?

Lee will fail to see that the orioles are very close to contending. We should go after Dunn. Offer him a 4 years 62 million dollars. Dunn can play 1B for 1 year with us then he moves to DH so we can sign AG. Then a real ace we could go after is Zach Greinke. Offer the Royals Pie,Tillman, Egan and Zagone. Then rotation 1: Greinke 2: Matusz 3: Guthrie 4: Bergesen 5: Arrieta/Britton. Lineup 1: Roberts 2B 2: Markakis RF 3: Burrell LF 4: Dunn 1B 5: Scott DH 6: Jones CF 7: Wieters C 8: Wigginton 3B 9: Andino SS.

I think the pirates should sign someone with credability like phil garner, eric wedge, ect…
But they will ask for more money than what the bucs want to spend so insted they will sign a minor league manager or mlb coach to be the manager and pass him off as the next Jim Leyland.
