so the jays and bautista are going to arb now for sure? seems like they shoulda been able to settle somewhere in the middle of those 2 figures. I bet Bautista wins that case if they go to arb.

Even with the numbers he put up, that seems a little steep to me. I don’t know how far the mediator’s threshold is for player figures, but I can’t see Jose getting that much. Just a little less than what Hamilton filed for, but Hamilton has one other elite season to fall back on.

well considering that carlos quentin got 5 mill from the sox after the season he put up i highly doubt jose does not get what he is asking for

Q was a third time eligible arbitration player, and arbitration tends to add money every year. So after his monster 2008 he got a good amount of money, that increased last year and again this year, giving him 5 Million. That being said, it would make sense if Jose doesn’t get that much

They could still settle any time before the actual hearing.

cool thanks!

The jays gm has imposed a deadline as to day for one year deal, after filing he will on discuss multi year deals

Kind of a weird policy IMO, it’s one thing to not want to overpay for a guy, but to refuse to negotiate completely doesn’t really seem like it would benefit a team at all and might only serve to alienate a player from their team before the hearing. I guess its only real benefit is to try to discourage guys from even making it to this stage in the first place (submitting figures), and even there I’m not sure it’s completely worth it. I mean, the salary has to be determined at some point, why try to delay it further if you could try to reach a fair settlement?

I have a feeling an MVP award looks mighty nice to arbitrators. Rangers should just offer him something in the neighborhood of $11MM instead of delaying the inevitable.

Bautista: now it gets interesting.
I was originally pretty confused on how he would turn out in arbitration, and reading the great article on him earlier today just muddied the waters more (in a good way, mind you).

I didn’t expect O’Day to get 1 million at all. Seems like most relievers that are arb. eligible for the first time get a little under that mark. He should have accepted the Ranger’s offer.

I think if it goes to arbitration with Bautista they’ll side with the Jays. 10.5M is way too high.
Karkat
Don’t forget that arbitrators love flashy, mainstream stats like home runs. I wouldn’t put it past an arbitrator to decide that $7.6M is “not enough” for 54 home runs.
EddieWinslow
I understand that, but at the same time I think they’ll factor in his previous career high. I guess it’s not completely out of the question that they’d give him $10.5M, as there’s never really been a very similar situation, but I still think it’s way more likely that they would side with the Jays.

Gee, I wonder if there’s a number the Jays and Frasier could settle on?

From a cold, hard business standpoint, there’s really no reason for the Giants NOT to fight Torres in arbitration year in and year out. He won’t hit free agency until he’s what, 35? 36? It’s not going to matter much when that day comes if Torres holds a grudge from arbitration because he’ll quite likely be nearing the end anyway.

A lot of pitchers are still unsigned this could be an opportunity for Cashman to make a trade and help his rotation.

Holy cow Liriano. That almost makes up for the Capps overpay.

And highlights just how much of an overpay Capps is…
