I’m not knocking Crasnick or Nicholson-Smith. But how is this breaking news? It’s pretty much been a given for about 8 months now that Cahill would the next A’s player in line to be offered an extension.

It’s a shame they didn’t get aggressive in trying to extend him this time last year. They probably could have signed him for roughly the same amount as Brett Anderson signed for (4/$12.5M w/ 2 option years). But at this point, he’s probably in line for something closer to the 5/$30.1M deals that Yovani Gallardo and Ricky Romero got.
Hopefully Gio Gonzalez will also be offered an extension very soon. He’s the most talented A’s starting pitcher, in my opinion.
Daniel
He was hurt this time last year and vying for a 5th starter spot. I would not have extended him then.

I should have clarified. I wish they would have been aggressive in trying to extend him early last *season*. Not necessarily in late-March or early-April. But closer to July, which is when they extended Suzuki.
Also, I’m pretty sure the only reason he went on the DL is because they could afford to be extra cautious with him. If he had been needed on the Opening Day roster, I seriously doubt they would have shut him down. But they were pretty set with Sheets, Braden, Duchscherer, Anderson and Gonzalez.

Go for it, nothing gets Billy Beane better propsects then cost controled pitchers.
Alice
Billy has to sign him. Young, good potential, low cost, perfect.

Ben, you forgot the most valuable of the early signings, Mark Mulder. He pitched well for a few years, then brought us Dan Haren, and Daric Barton, then Haren brought us Brett Anderson, Chris Carter, and Carlos Gonzalez.
