I definitely like this
Jason McNeely 2
I like this as well, maybe a 3/18 contract. If Madson leaves after the season, Marshall could be the closer after that.
Shane Maples
Super excited about this, it will make losing Madson not as bad next offseason. Hopefully it’s atleast 3 years.
TophersReds
He’ll be the Closer in 2013 if the Reds can’t sign Madson again. I like it.
Ethanator99
Nice. I thought all along that if the Reds were able to extend him it made up for losing Travis Wood
Jason McNeely 2
Makes what we gave up to get him easier to swallow too.

What none of you guys understand Madson is signed through 2013. It is a club option for 2013 so he will be here next also unless he falls on his face.
TophersReds
I’m pretty sure there is no option at all for 2013. Bbref has him becoming a FA in 2013.
Edit: I misread Madson as Marshall. And yes, like the guy below me said, it is a mutual option.
Brett Gabbard
What you don’t understand is that it’s a mutual option. Madson isn’t taking it if he has a good year.
Jason_F
Mutual options almost never get exercised. I can’t remember the last one that was. All it takes is one side to think the player is worth slightly more/less than the option’s value. Also, after this offseason, Madson will surely want a multi-year deal next year.

I was concerned this wouldnt get done
Def good news
notsureifsrs
makes more sense than it used to given that you can’t get draft picks for these guys anymore

This is a great signing for the Reds! Marshall is a rare breed-a left hander that can carve up righties; a non closer relief pitcher that has been consistently good for a few years; a player that has proved to be durable. Plus, he’s got this laid back attitude and non athletic look about him that makes him appear harmless. Don’t let him fool you-he’s deadly.
My second favorite relief pitcher-Mike Adams is still #1 in my book.

Sean Marshall is no Scott Downs. Almost, but not quite.

I wonder how much better his stats may have been if he had been pitching in Arizona or San Diego as his home park? Chicago is a launching pad.
ubercubsfan
If I recall correctly, Wrigley has been a pitchers park the last few years.
jhfdssdaf
2011, yes, it was the 23rd most hitter friendly park, according to ESPN, with a park rating of 0.934.
In 2010 and 2009, it was the third most hitter friendly park, 8th in 2008, and 2nd in 2007.
Had you said “Wrigley was a pitchers park last year” you would be correct. “Last few years” is dead wrong.

Scott downs sucks
