A quick post-chat question. You alluded that the Giants would want to avoid spending $40M on two pitchers, but with Zito’s contract they are already doing just that. With Huff coming off the books next season (after they decline his option) that would more than cover the growth in Cain’s contract for a year (also they have $35M in other free agents including Rowand’s dead contract to fill voids and pay raises) ; then Zito comes off the books the next season. Given the model of building around dependable pitching it makes a lot of sense to give Cain $20M/yr. as well as Lincecum.
they’ll have raises coming to madison bumgarner, posey, (possibly) belt, and wilson among others within that time frame. not all of that money coming off the books will be available.
