Hamels, 6 years/$23MM per = $138MM guaranteed he gets, 7 years/$23MM per = $161MM a very distinct possibility.
GMwannabe
Hamels will be in Dodger Blue.. no question in my mind.. Yankees and Red Sox both have big commitments already and the new Dodger ownership group will be looking to make a splash in their first offseason..
Kershaw/Hamels would easily be the best 1-2 in baseball
UltimateYankeeFan
I don’t see the Yankees going after Hamels. Perhaps Anibal Sanchez he’s an excellent pitcher and will be a lot cheaper. Don’t count out the Red Sox, yes they have some heavy commitments like Gonzalez and Crawford and soon to be Ellsbury. But they also have Dice K’s $10MM and Jenks $6MM and probably Youkilis’s $12MM plus and maybe even Ortiz’s $14MM plus coming off their books next season. So they will have the money.

I tend to see Cherington as being more cautious in the FA market for the foreseeable future. I doubt they’ll make serious offers to either Hamels or Grienke for that matter. Sanchez or Marcum maybe if the price is right or possibly making a move on Garza if the Cubs shop him.
As for Hamels: the Phils, the yanks, and the Dodgers seem like the most likely landing spots. Another possibility might include the Rangers if they lose out on or let Hamilton walk.
Chris
I dont see the yankees signing him because i see them trading for greinke. Brewers have said already they will shop him around by the trade dealine if their out of the race. with the brewers sitting in 5th place right now in their division 7 games back, if they fall below the 10 game mark greinke is on the market. that team lost its edge when fielder left. Kuroda or Nova (more then likely Kuroda) will be moved to the bullpen as a long relief guy. Kuroda isnt cutting it, he isnt pitching like he did in LA for so many years. plus getting greinke would fix their pitching issue for next season also with kuroda and pettitte only being on 1 yr contracts. so with pineda coming back next season and if they aquire greinke it will give hte yankees one of the best 1,2 punches in a rotation in baseball.

Greinke? You are kidding? He’d never survive in NY.
jigokusabre
Hasn’t Greinke said that he refuses to go to NY?
Havok9120
No. Other way around: Cashman refuses to sign him.
Chris
idk about the rangers, they still have to resign mike adams and napoli. and its been reported that napoli is looking at a contract around 75 million. and then there is resigning mike adams if they want to keep their team intact. although hamels would look nice pitching behind darvish but its also a big risk. NL pitchers dont seem to fair to well moving to the AL. not many have been able to make that transition. but i think his attitude would hurt the rangers ” fun ” mentality. i mean back in 2010 during hte world series he says he cant wait until the season is over even the phillies could have still forced a game 7 where he would pitch, was a sign he is a quitter under pressure. then his beaning a player to ” welcome him to the majors ” and actually admitting it? he speaks to freely also lol. Rangers just need to stick to what they do best and thats groom their own pitchers but stop trying to convert a closer into a starter because obviously that didnt work out to well and prob have lost feliz for the year.
UltimateYankeeFan
Chris, I have to disagree with you about a Yankees/Greinke match up. Cashman has stated several times even recently. That he does not like to pay twice for a player any player. I doubt very, very seriously Cashman will give up prospects to the Brewers and then pay a premium to sign him long term. Not in the cards my friend in my opinion.

I threw the Rangers in mostly as a darkhorse.
As for Feliz, I think it was a justified idea. Feliz was groomed in the minors to be a starter and this is a team that has had success in converting their previous closer into solid starter.

The Yankees can probably be counted out, because they want to get below the luxury tax threshold.
captainjeter
that is a good name for you, wannbe GM.
Phillies_Aces35
Cliff Lee was supposed to be a New York Yankee too.
aemoreira81
…until the fans mistreated his wife.
Phillies_Aces35
… had absolutely nothing to do with him not signing in New York.

I’m not sure why Hamels would get more than Sabathia and Santana both pitchers had 3 Cy Young awards between them before they signed big contracts. I mean wouldn’t it put the leverage in the hands of team and not the agent? But of course some team will come along and overpay.

Market forces. It’s also quite possible by the way Hamels is pitching that he might win the Cy Young Award this season. That’ll certainly help his market value.
My guess, though, is based on the way the Yankees have operated the past few off seasons that they will not be serious bidders on Hamels services.

Francesa was just joking around about Hal selling the Yankees. He said maybe Jeter and ARod can pool their money together with a few investors and buy the team. Not seeing this happen, but it is a funny idea.

There is one other team that shouldn’t be dismissed as a possibility. The Lerners of the Nationals have deep pockets–they own just about every high-end shopping center in the D.C. area.
During the winter meetings a year ago, the Nats matched the Brewers in prospects for Greinke, but Greinke’s agent declined an extension offer that, with incentives, would’ve been worth 100 million. Greinke felt the Brewers were closer to making the World Series.
Edwin Jackson was signed to a one year contract.
If the Nationals offered, say, Jordan Zimmerman to either the Phils or the Brewers and could agree to terms with either Hamels or Greinke on a contract, one of the two could end up in Washington by the trade deadline.
The money is there, if not the allure of LA or NY.
