Actually I’d enjoy it if he were a player-manager for at least a year. Its been a long time since we’ve had one and just think it’d be a fun tip of the hat to the “good old days.”
FS54 2
yeah, especially if Rockies don’t plan to contend.
jigokusabre
Agreed. Given that he’s a full time PH these days, there’s no reason not to.
lefty177
Could you imagine him telling the team he’s pinch hitting? I could see so many homes come out of that
jigokusabre
Hey, Pete Rose wrote himself into the lineup every day. Giambi taking the big PH wouldn’t be such a big deal.
johnsilver
Rose also wrote his team that he managed on betting slips to lose also..
jigokusabre
Obviously… but it’s not as if he explained that to his players.
Dirtbag Blues
Rose never bet on the Reds to lose, only to win.
johnsilver
HA! so Pete Rose said, but without proof? he is guilty of both now isn’t he?
Rose put himself into that situation and doubt even in this current “enlightened” situation where people seem to forgive criminals of everything.. He’ll never even get away with that…

I LOVE the idea of player-manager pinch hitter extraordinaire. Can you imagine him calling a batter back to the dugout in the 9th, grabbing some lumber and being like “Lemme handle this one, kid.” Wouldn’t that just be too good to be true?
slowernet
It’s possible I’m being thick, but has there been an admitted PED user as an MLB manager to this point?
LiveFastCyYoung
Am I the only one that feels like there isn’t a chance in hell he gets the job?
dc21892
Why would they interview him if he didn’t have a chance?
jigokusabre
Probably.
Tracey left because he didn’t have any control over the team, ownership was making all the decisions. I could see experienced managers not wanting any part of that. The Rockies probably think that an in-house candidate would make for a more interesting team than a coach that the fans have never heard of (ie Dave Martinez).

I like this choice, a more relatable (younger) manager for a younger team. I bet Giambi can make more money as a manager at this stage than as a player. He really has nothing left to prove and I can say (as a Red Sox fan) that Helton and Giambi isn’t going to be the answer at 1B next year for the Rockies. Even if you sprinkle a little Pachecho.
Gumby65
Anyone who considers taking this job should consult with Art Howe on how to stand on the top step of the dugout, as this would apparently be the most important part of the job.

The Rockies are a laughing stock. If they hired Giambi ownership would lose even further credibility. Imagine 3, 5, 10, and 20 years from now as the Rockies interview for future managers. The bar will be set so low that no reputable manager would apply and those that do apply will realize they could skate by simply being yes men. If you’re going internal, go with Castilla. If you can go external (and can find someone like Wallach or Sandberg willing to take the position) that should be priority #1. This organization needs new blood.

Are some of my fellow Rox fans in denial here?

To be a fly on the wall in that interview.
“Jason, what is best in life?”
“To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their fans!”

If there was to be a player manager in the majors, Giambi would make more sense than when the White Sox were considering it for Konerko. Not because one has better knowledge than the other, but like previously stated, Giambi’s role has pretty much succumbed to one at-bat (if that) a game.
Chaim Breslow's Purse
Have him pop out the steroids to all his players once he gets the job. Now that’s a great idea.
Koolarrow
Giambi’s legacy would be cemented by managing the Rockies and all of them getting suspended for PEDs.
