Why aren’t the Pirates suitors for Overbay a second time around? 😉
LazerTown
Brewers and Astros have noone better for 1B than Overbay?
Sure he will fill a roster spot, but he really provides nothing with the bat at this point.
oh Hal
It’s Cafardo speculation.
DarthMurph
It’s good that Boras wants to defend Morales’ demands by citing the second or third greatest DH of all time, depending on how you rate Ortiz against Edgar Martinez.
LazerTown
Right. Ortiz has no position, but he is fine because he is very good with the bat. Morales really isn’t anything special.
30 yo Morales : .277/.336/.449
30 yo Ortiz : .287/.413/.636
37 yo Ortiz : .309/..395/.564
No comparison really.
Mendry Korales
Thanks for providing the numbers for a guy with HOF numbers vs a nobody whom is best known for busting ankle by jumping onto home plate.
johnsilver
Typical Boras.. compare “his” guy to someone at the top of the heap.. Agree with RevMurph and Martinez with the amount of play at DH, then 36-40YO Rico Carty.
As it is? He may end up not signing until camps are underway.
The_Unnatural
Also, Morales injured himself after about a week of consistent play making a routine play at 1b filling in for Smoak. I wouldn’t trust him to hold down 1b.
GD
A NL GM States: “There’s going to be a dance where everyone is in the same boat and then there will be a team that breaks the bank for him.”
He mentions “boat”. Well, there is a lot of fishing, boats, Mariners, sailers in Seattle.
Sounds like Seattle is out at this point, but probably has the most money to sneak in here and blow him away.
Robinson Canose
Having to explain an unfunny joke (within a joke) is not funny.

Most coastal teams are near areas where fish are sold or bartered.

Is Damon a HoF? He has 400 SB 200 hrs 2700 hits. Never was an MVP but was always a really good player.
pitnick
I say no. He had a good long career, but he was never more than good. To me, HOFers need a higher peak, where they were clearly one of the top players in the game for that duration. Was Damon ever one of the 10 best? One of the 20 best?
Michael 22
Really good career stats, but you can make the same comment about Tommy John, Gil Hodges, Dwight Evans (heck, even Darrell Evans), Keith Hernandez, etc. If Damon were to get 3,000 hits it would be as a pathetic hanger-on probably DHing and playing emergency LF for the Astros.
robbyrob 2
Very consistent and above average player but not a HOF’r . I can see where an argument could be made and sure he has better numbers then some current players in the hall.
Damon Bowman
I won’t argue with most of the guys you compared Damon to — Hall of Fame-wise. However, Keith Hernandez has been eternally disrespected by Hall of Fame watchers and voters because he wasn’t jacking 30+ HRs like most first basemen do. While he wasn’t swinging for the fences, he was a career .300 hitter and the best fielding 1B ever. With a better career OBP+ than HOFers and contemporaries Paul Molitor and Tony Perez, Hernandez should have received more consideration than he has.
dwarfstar
I absolutely agree with that statement. Keith Hernandez should be in the Hall of Fame.
The_Unnatural
Well, he was never an elite player, but he was good for a really long time, so he meets the criteria for the HoF.
NomarGarciaparra
What? I have never ever in my life considered Damon to come close to HOF. He had a good and long career, but he was never an elite player.

I Want My Bird
Manny’s hitting with the Rays was putrid at the end, and he hasn’t lit it up in his international play, so I disagree that “he’ll always be able to hit”.
Michael 22
I hate to play the cranky neighbor, but I wish we didn’t have to hear any more about Manny. Much like A-Rod, I question how many HRs and how much of his career in general was legit.

Scott Boras… SMH
In the end, he costs the baseball fans money because ticket prices go up because of his so called fine work! Plus, tell me which of his free agents directly helped a team win a World Series. To me it’s always like a Cody Ross or David Freese kind of player.
Lastly, the closer it gets to Spring Training, the more I am convinced that the Orioles are NOT going to do a blessed thing!

Yankees vs Cubs for Tanaka
Damon Bowman
Typical Boras — “five or six teams…concerning Drew.” Realistically, the only teams interested in Drew are the Red Sox and Mets. I can’t even see four teams beyond those two who would even benefit from bringing Drew in to supplant whatever SS is already in place. I only see three others — Houston, Miami, and Minnesota — and none of them are in the market for Drew.

The footnotes on Cafardo’s column always bring back memories. this time the infamous “Michael G to Michael T” blow up a game tandem.
Michael G brown was one of the top Red Sox prospects for years, but never panned out. he would start a game and boston would end up behind in the game immediately, then switched to the BP and throw fuel on the fire. Mike trujillo was the same as a reliever, taken in the Rule 5 draft, only they kept him on the roster for that full season and was pretty bad. It was a sad pen the time both Michael “G” and Michael “T” were both together that year, 1985.

How could the Twins be a mystery team for Bronson Arroyo when its been no secret that they at least had interest in him since free agency started back in early November
Chris Smith
No idea why the Phillies would sign Arroyo. This has to be old news prior to the Hernandez signing. He may have thrown 200in for so many years but sometime soon that’s going to break down
