We need more Ozzie Guillen in the AL Central…come on Twins, make it happen!
Unassisted Triple Play
I’m sure you would LOVE for guillen to come in and ruin the twins. It’s not going to happen.
Curt Green
Ruin the Twins? Have you been around the last 4 years??
buffalonichols
They are finally starting to show some promise again. I don’t want Guillen anywhere near this team. There’s a reason Miami fired him one year into a four-year contract, after all.
Curt Green
I know BUT two things I do like about him. His relationship to Latin players and his spunky attitude. Who are we kidding, Paul has the job locked down. they just don’t want it to be obvious.
buffalonichols
I think the negatives overwhelm those two positives. I think there’s a pretty good chance he’s not the only Latino candidate out there who has some fire in his belly.
joe 44
yea and that reason is fidel castro
Unassisted Triple Play
Doug Mientkiewicz would be a VERY popular pick among the twins loyal fan base. There’s not direct coaching ties to the previous regime – clean break – and he brings a young fresh approach that is desperately needed. I think he would be successful just as Brad Ausmus has seen success with Detroit.
Curt Green
Of course, he won’t have the same players or owners as Brad Ausmus.
Unassisted Triple Play
You’re right – his players will be better! =) Buxton Sano Meyer Berrios Stewart Gordon — Future looks gooooooood!
M.Kit
writers would hate it….for the name alone
buffalonichols
Sickening. I guess Ryan was lying when he talked about casting a wide net in this search. Or his definition of a “casting a wide net” is vastly different from nearly everybody else. Look, I think Molitor and Mientkiewicz are relatively solid candidates, but I hope they truly are considering more candidates, especially ones from outside the organization. Even if they end up hiring Molitor or Dougie Baseball.
Karl Larson
Don’t forget that Tony Pena was the runner-up in the process when Gardy took over in 2003. The search isn’t over. Both Moli and Doug are fine candidates anyways. What you should be upset about is if the Twins don’t hire a Spanish-speaking coach from outside the org.
Sky14
I agree, would hope the team does it’s due diligence to find the best candidate and wouldn’t mind seeing a manager open to new ideas like use of shifts and analytics. That being said I wouldn’t be upset with Molitor or Dougie. In fact I like most the names floated out thus far.
Dock_Elvis
It likely WAS a wide net. He tossed it out from his office and snagged the first few people he hit.
Aloha Jack
Bring back Tom Kelly!
Twinsfan79
While I would welcome such a move, it ain’t happening. Although I do believe he would be the best candidate hands down. No nonsense kinda guy. Very capable of managing high caliber players and young ones alike. Exactly what this team needs.
Bg
Please no. Tom did a great job with team back in the day, but he’s too much like gardenhire which as we know didn’t work any longer with the current roster.
Bg
Will be surprised if team goes outside organization for this. That’s how they operate. That’s the reason gardenhire lasted as long as he did. Anywhere else and he would have been let go years ago.
One positive with molitor is that gardy didn’t want him on staff which seems to indicate he had a different philosophy. In the end think they will hire molitor as mgr and Doug m will be mgr in waiting when molitor retires.
StantonLikeMyDaddy
Oquendo, Maddux, Martinez, Dougie…in that order
Michael 22
Roy Howell?
Gland1
No Wally Backman here either?
Dock_Elvis
I picture Paul Molitor sitting in an office dimming the lights for his video resume. On the screen pop Teddy Higuera and Jim Gantner standing in the middle of a random AZ practice field giving a Letterman’s top 10 list of reasons to hire Paul Molitor
DippityDoo
Seems like the right kinda situation for Mike Maddux, but it will never happen.
Ryan F.
If I’m the Rangers I hire Mike Maddux as manager and prevent him from interviewing anywhere else
wkkortas
John Russell should never be allowed to be anywhere near a big league bench again; his tenure in Pittsburgh was a disaster, and that’s not even considering his record.
sdimmick3
although i agree, consider what he had to work with too. It’s not like he had Sano, Buxton and others waiting in line.
wkkortas
Again, it wasn’t his record–the Pirate clubhouse was in such chaos that he had to go to ownership to get rid of Joe Kerrigan, who was “conspiring” with veteran players to have some sort of leadership/semblance of a pulse in the locker room. Though he has (or at least, had) a rep for being good with young players, I wouldn’t want him anywhere near mine.
Unassisted Triple Play
Whoever it’s going to be is really really going to have a tall task in getting the same respect Gardy got from his players. Say what you will about the last four seasons – Gardenhire was and always will be a top notch and classy manager who did great things when given the talent to do so. I mean 6 division titles in a decade against teams with much higher payrolls? Great job! I hope the Twins find the right man cuz they let a good one go.
Big Giant Head
agreed!
Bg
Not sure if respect is the proper term here. Honestly think players got too chummy with him which is different than respect when it comes to a manager/employee professional relationship.
Also disagree with him doing great things. He did good with the talent but not great IMO. Team was right up there in division for payroll and division was very weak those years.
Do think new mgr will have his work cut out for him to change bad habits
tigerfan1968
I agree. As a Tiger fan I think the Twins have always won more games than I would have thought. No hitting, no pitching and yet they are close to respectable. If Sano and Buxton are near what they are supposed to be someone will be getting a good team to build with. I do wonder why Lovullo and Sandy Alomar Jr. seem to have been interviewed for the last 20 openings and have been shut out . At what point do you say enough or basta or suficiente.
bigmike04
Ozzie guillen doesnt need to take a managing job anywhere since he getting paid not to manage in majors by miami…
Tyler Claus Coners
I wanna see Doug Mientkiewicz get the job. He kinda knows how to handle younger talent.
Melvin Mendoza, Jr.
They can have Fredi Gonzalez
ray1
Why hasn’t Molitor been offered the job?
Dock_Elvis
Because Jim Gantner keeps demanding to be named second base coach. No idea..Id say it’s his to lose and they aren’t in a rush to announce it during playoff time.
Vandals Took The Handles
Sounding more and more like the Twins had one or two guys in mind….probably from their own organization, but are taking the opportunity to find out in-depth about theories other teams are using.
M.Kit
Seems Lovullo is destined to get a manager job one of these days. Has been a finalist countless times now it seems
dickwhitman
Bob Elliott is with the Toronto Sun, not the Toronto Star. The Star is the superior newspaper but Elliott, as the best baseball columnist in Canada, almost evens the scales.
Steve Adams
Thanks. That’s been corrected.
Curt Green
Since it has been 23 years since the last WS appearance, it makes perfect sense to hire from within. NOT!
