Right. Hire Scott Boras as your agent. Then tell the media you wont ask for an astronomical figure. My question is why did you hire Boras then? Boras agreeing to an extension for him is likely nill.

Of course Boras would say that Arrieta’s low inning totals bode well for the future as he ages. And, if he had a lot of innings until now, Boras would remark at Arrieta’s extreme durability and how that bodes well for the future. Boras knows what he’s doing.

God forbid an agent always find a way to talk positively about their clients…..

Boras wants his cake and eat it as well, though. Also, if I’m not mistaken, I did give him props at the end, no?

If I were Jake Arrieta, I’d want my arb years bought out PLUS a 7-year / $175 million extension on top of that. The same extension King Felix got from his hometown Seattle Mariners.

2yr/30 3yr/55 4yr/85 only deals I would offer him. Pick one, we’ll talk at the end of it.

Please feel free to name any Cubs pitcher as an extension candidate

Arrieta’s awesome, but….There’s no urgency on Cubs’ part. I’d wait for dominance over multiple seasons before spending 9 figures. In their worst case scenario, they have him under team control for 2 more seasons with most of this team as well, and will get him below market value through arbitration. This year is his first over 200 IP. Pitchers get hurt all the time, he’ll be 32 for the 2018 season, and hopefully will be the best pitcher in baseball at that time. Even if the Cubs were to lose him they’d get a first round pick and have giant money to throw at another FA. They’ll have a better idea in 2 years whether Arrieta looks like the 2015 version for 6-7 more seasons after 2017 and will have less risk signing him at that time than paying up now after 1 great season.
Boras will ask for 7-8 years and 180-210 mil to extend him now. I’d wait until he does it for 2 more years to see where he and the team are performing and decide on him then.
