Nolasco and Arroyo aren’t really the best of comparisons as their deals have been stinkers.. Especially, with Nolasco.. I think the entire baseball world said a collective “why?” when he was signed to that contract.. He had a solid contract year, but before and since then, he has been a disappointment.. His peripherals have always been decent but his actual results haven’t..
Sooner or later players are going to start accepting qualifying offers and teams are not going to be handing them out so freely.. I was really surprised when Cuddyer didn’t accept his this past off season.. If I was Chen or Gallardo, I would accept the QO this year and go for free agency next year when the market for starters will be quite a bit softer..

I only mention those deals as market markers for guys who looked like 3-4 type starters (and, yes, have been quite a bit less since signing). Chen is a Boras guy and reasonably young. I’d be surprised if he takes it.
But I agree that someone will take one sooner than later. Will be interesting to see if this is the year. I think Cuddyer would have, but the Mets offer materialized while he was weighing the decision.
It will be tempting for guys like Gallardo and Chen, b/c there are a lot of arms out there, but to some extent you have to take the multi-year chance when you have a solid season to build on. It’s all a calculated risk — not sure there’s enough downside (see, e.g. Ervin Santana) to pass on the chance to test the market.

What seems sensible to many of us with regards to Chen and a qualifying offer can be shot down by two words: Scott Boras. With that man as your agent reason goes out the window.
