I’d much rather see Betts approached regarding a LT deal than Bogaerts if Bogaerts himself isn’t of mind right away to sign an extension. Betts is the superior performer on the field and could probably be signed to a much better financial agreement.

Or… both.

We’d have to wait and see how much it would cost right now. Guerra 2.. Maybe 3 years away the only complete SS package they have. They do have both Marrero and Lin as glove only types who could play the position now as short term possibilities. SS isn’t a position they are weak at in the minor league system.

I don’t think it is an either/or or both situation, each player situation offers differing circumstances. Betts may be the better overall player who offers consistent performance around the field, but Bogaerts is an bat first everyday SS with a decent glove. The arbitration of those players can get expensive, and I would think it would be wise to set the market as opposed to having the next wave of complete SS affect his dollar value.

Howard and Ruf have actually been a decent platoon at 1B. Not like the Phillies have a 1B prospect thats kicking down the door. Only way that someone comes in and takes 1B away from Howard/Ruf is if Knapp and Alfaro (both catchers) both start raking.
Howard: OPS of .802 vs RHP w/ 20 HR
Ruf: 1.124 OPS vs LHP w/ 7 HR (100 PA)

I would love to see both Bogaerts and Betts signed to LT deals. If you can nab 2-3 of their FA years, That would still give both the opportunity to hit the market at age 28-29

A Bogaerts extension wouldn’t make much sense right now. 2016 will likely determine what kind of player he actually is.

The reasoning to do so now would be preemptive to arbitration. Set the rate as opposed to following it
