Signing players to huge deals who make their living with their legs into their late 30’s always in the past has proven bad business wise. Most FA LT deals are going to have a couple of years at the end where the player value is not good, but one whose total value is with speed is not a good idea.
Lately even. Bourne, even with their own previous CF they only signed to a 4y extension with the team option and both he and Ells being the same age, same speed and comparable with the bat, as well as defensively.. Then paid one triple the other 3y longer via FA.
Not dicing NY here, Ells can pull the ball for power when he chooses as he has shown before and maybe that’s what NY was thinking when they signed him.. A Johnny Damon ++ type, only this one could hit 30+ HR consistently. I think it’s possible, if he beefs up just a little.

Nope, players with his skill-set age very well.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-slow-decline-of-speedy-out…

I don’t think Ellsbury is an albatross yet, he has proven to be durable for his standards while on NY, I think the Gardner/Ellsbury 1,2 experiment has reached the end though, I don’t think they can both co-exist on the same team. Should be interesting to see if the Yankees try to bring in a 3rd team that would take Gardner and Headley, and try to get Frazier off the Reds. Jake Cave and Slade Heathcott are also very intriguing are they 4A players or just simply blocked as CF/Lefty bats.
