That roster is… unispiring.
I know it’s easy to pick on Preller, but nothing went right for them. It all blew up in their face.
seamaholic 2
I wonder if Melvin Upton might be a bad contract trade partner for Jose Reyes? Reyes is a switch hitter and could take over either SS or 2B for a couple years. Intra-divisional trade, but both teams suck for now, so who cares.
RedRooster
Melvin was serviceable this year and we don’t have any better options in center field unless Jankowski can improve on his .589 OPS so I think we just roll with Melvin for now.
YourDaddy
Reyes has been injury prone and with a lack of backups, not sure if that makes him a good fit in San Diego.

What do you think it would take for Boston to make a shields for Sandvoal trade happen
mike244
Boston would probably have to eat about 10-15mil of Sandoval’s contract. Still, according to park/league adjusted ERA+ Shields (93) was a below average pitcher and was worse than Miley (96). He’s also an extreme FB pitcher with bad numbers at Fenway. Not sure he’s the best fit. I think Boston would rather wait and see if Sandoval bounces back
seamaholic 2
Shields in no way is an extreme flyball pitcher. He’s about average. His HR/FB just jumped last year, which is almost always a fluke.
mike244
You’re right, I just checked his FB%’s, average. Point still remains though, I think the Redsox would rather keep Sandoval and hope for a bounce back and the Padres would prefer Shields.
RedRooster
It’s just not gonna happen

The length of the “outlook” post for the Padres reflects the difficulties facing Preller and company. However, while Preller is neither a genius (as of December 31, 2014) nor an idiot (as of July 31, 2015), he did one thing with the 2015 Padres that no one seemed to notice: he made them younger than the 2014 team. I think he can do the same thing this offseason, and still make them better. For example: (1) Using the ‘scarcity’ principle, he should move Myers to 1B and get another young, available, and controllable outfielder, such as Leonys Martin, who is not long for Texas. With Martin, Jankowski and Upton, outfield defense would be greatly improved. (2) Bring in two young, available, controllable shortstops. There are several candidates, including Marcus Semien (who will field better in 2016), Hanser Alberto, Jonathan Villar, Ryan Goins, and Luis Sardinas. (3) Acquire Matt Duffy (HOU), Colin Walsh (OAK), and Matt Hague (TOR), three ‘post prospects’ who will hit in the majors if given a chance.
RedRooster
You forgot Matt Kemp in the outfield. It’s not like he’s going anywhere.
RedRooster
Wallace as a non-tender candidate? Dunno bout that! He was the best pinch hitter in baseball this year and the Padres are short on good lefty bats even with him around. I think Middlebrooks is more likely to get non-tendered because he’s no longer pre-arb, he’s out of options, Solarte has basically won the starting 3rd base job and there are much better guys we could carry on our bench.
I’m hoping we sign Ian Desmond to play shortstop. He will cost a draft pick but because we have a protected pick it isn’t that big of a deal. If we get Desmond we will have 4 picks in the top 75: The 8th pick, comp picks for Upton and Kennedy and then the Competitive Balance Round B pick.
RedRooster
The following Padres players are out of options: Yonder Alonso, Tyson Ross, Brett Wallace, Will Middlebrooks, Nick Vincent and Rymer Liriano.
YourDaddy
Just let Middlebrooks go. He has no value. Give Solarte the 3B job and let him play everyday. Trade Kimbrel for a shortstop plus a couple of prospects ( How about Baez, McKinney & CJ Edwards) and keep Benoit. Justin Upton is gone so Myers is a shoe-in to take over LF, not move to 1B. Renfroe is in no way ready for the majors. At least a full year in AAA before that is a possibility. If Jankowski falters then call up Liriano. It wasn’t Norris’ worst year at the plate, it was his 2nd best (or right about his career average). Trade him now or move him to 1B. Ross is a top 20 pitcher in the game regardless of what measure you use and is under team control through 2017. It makes little sense to trade him if you are looking to contend now, which is the Padres FO’s continuing refrain. The starting rotation needs help, but there are so many FA pitchers available that the glut will mean someone serviceable will be available at a price the Padres can afford. Padres desperately need left handed relievers, starters and hitters.
cosmo1
Baez/Mkinney/Edwards would be a huge haul for Kimbrel, especially at his salary
YourDaddy
Look at what the Padres gave up and took on to get Kimbrel. Its not asking too much and I am far from the first person to mention it as a possibility.
petrie000
that package is for Kimbrel AND Ross, right? Because Baez alone is worth more than Kimbrel just because he can be an every day starter for either team next season.
ronnsnow
Baez is NOT worth more than Kimbrel lol
YourDaddy
To get Kimbrel it will likely take a haul that includes a major league starter, a teams #1 prospect and at least one more top 10 prospect. How do I know? It’s what the Padres gave up to get him and at just 27, Kimbrel’s value has not declined.
Baez is not worth any major league starter at this point and certainly not an elite closer. He is still a prospect. His time in the majors has not been impressive and his value is relatively low, but he has great potential and is only 22.
Ross is one of the top 12-20 pitchers in the game regardless of what measures or stats you use. To get him alone it would take a package that included at least 2 of those 3 and a young, controllable major league starter like Hendricks.
Ben J.
His value has declined. 1 less year of control.
disgruntledreader 2
Recognizing that the Maybin+Quentin for Mupton part of the trade was all about dumb dollars and roster spots, the Padres traded Matt Wisler, Jordan Paroubek and a Comp Balance pick for Kimbrel. Which is not at all what you claim they gave up above. (And they got another year of control for Kimbrel. Who wasn’t then coming off a down year.)
RedRooster
There’s no “calling up Liriano.” He’s out of options. He gets a spot on the Major League roster no matter what unless Preller trades him. I think we roll with the Norris/Hedges tandem at catcher for now. Hedges can’t hit and Norris can’t play 1st base.

What would it take to acquire Adrian Gonzalez?
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Anthony Rizzo…
philly435
The Padres are a mess. I know hindsight is 20/20 and props to Preller for doing SOMETHING to jump start a long suffering franchise but these were some bad trades made by the Padres. We have seen time and time again that these free agent/trade mega teams just don’t gel. The Marlins that one year certainly didn’t work and the same team didn’t work when it was simply moved to Toronto. Not only that, most of the guys the Padres got were not cause to rave over. Middlebrooks, present day Kemp, Norris, and the ambulance dwelling starters are iffy acquisitions at best and got a ton of hype because they came in a bundle
I understand that literally nothing went right for the Padres, but was anyone honestly expecting that bunch to do much in the first place? Really tough spot they’re in now, really tough
AardsmatoZupcic
Sandoval, Marrero, Bradley, Owens, Ball, Barnes, and cash for Shields, Ross, and Kimbrel. Sox can then flip Shields if they feel he’s not a great fit for Fenway. Feel free to add pieces to make this work.
RedRooster
We don’t want Sandoval. And you won’t be able to “flip Shields” without eating some of his salary.
Lance
IF the pads are looking to unload Shields and his contract (and frankly, I don’t know why since he pretty much delivered what you expect from JS) then why not look north to the Dodgers again who have money and would be looking to unload Either or Crawford and probably pick up most of their contracts AND pick up Shields contract. To me, it’s a win-win. The Dodgers could use an innings eater like Shields, ESPECIALLY if Grienke doesn’t come back.
RedRooster
Would make sense if the Padres didn’t also have a logjam in the outfield
eldamian2505
Pablo Sandobal, Miley, Deven Marrero and Bradley Jr for Krimbel and Ross
RedRooster
How about no
jmi1950
Kimbrel, Upton & Middlebrooks to Red Sox for Panda, Miley, Owens , Devon Marrero & $$. SD gets Salary relief, a LH hitting 3B, 2 LHSP’s & a SS prospect.
SOX get a top closer, 4th OF, a spot for Hanley at 3b for 100-110 games, 25-30 at DH against LHSP’s to keep Papi fresh. Middlebrooks plays 3b against LHSP’s and 3b defense in late innings and when Porcello starts.
RedRooster
Nah, not interested in the Panda
jmi1950
There is a price to unload 33MM left on Upton’s toxic contract and get 3 young cheap players which is greater than a somewhat over paid Kimbrel.
RedRooster
Sorry, just not interested in Panda
eldamian2505
They trade Middlebrooks a while ago and he hasn’t improve what make you think they want it back. There is not way Hanley is going to play 3 base. They have Holt and Shaw to back up 3 base.
jmi1950
There is no way Hanley can play 1b. He will allow every slightly off target throw to be an error until he pulls a hammy or has a Cliff Floyd type collision. The Sox have 3 yrs 66 MM left on Hanley’s contract. He will be the DH in 2017-18. They have a stud 3b prospect due in 2 yrs. For 2016 they need to get rid of Panda and use Shaw, Holt, Hanley and one more RH bat at 1b/3b/U/DH(Papi needs days off against LHSP’s). Holt is the 2b/ss back up.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
The Rock Star GM is looking more like The Washed Up GM after this season.
Paco
SD needs to stop labeling all of its players as “utilities”.
Give 2B to Spangenberg, 3B to Gyorko, C to Hedges (mid season), RF to Hunter Renfroe, CF to Jankowski, etc
That is how good teams are built, with a home grown core.
Paco
The SF Giants are the model of succes… Posey, Belt, Panik, Crawford, Duffy, Blanco, etc…
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yes, their whole infield is great. Meanwhile the Padres thought it would be a good idea to try Gyorko at SS…
Paco
AJ Preller needs a plan! If PetCo Park is an extreme pitchers park, then build your team with good pitching, good defense, some speed
Paco
Aquire AJ Pierzinsky and semi platoon him with Hedges… AJ hits RHPs very well, so you can also plan him at 1B and give Hedges more ABs
Paco
Then trade D Norris to TB, CHI (AL), LA (AL) or to a team that needs a C.
