Even though Estrada still has a Qualifying Offer in hand, can the jays still sign him today or tomorrow?
Steve Adams
Yep. He can sign any contract at any time now. Signing elsewhere would just be a de facto means of rejecting the QO.
For instance, Cuddyer signed his two-year deal with the Mets last year before the official deadline to accept or decline his QO.

Quite a chess match eh? If I’m him, I’m accepting the QO (easy for me to say as I’m not a millionaire) if he doesn’t sign a multi with them beforehand. I’m thinking he may sit for some time, with a draft pick attached, but, then again, who knows? I just can’t see him getting much more than 3 years somewhere around 9-10 mill, but even then, with a draft pick attached, and so much uncertainty about his track record, it’s tough to say. If he does come back, would really like to see Navarro back as well, they just seemed to be in such sync. I really thought Navarro was a better game caller than Russ Martin. I’m still upset about the 3-2 slider call to Lorenzo Cain, leading off the inning.

If we pretend he was arbitration eligible again for another year, what would he get? What is the amount of money attached to the draft pick forfeiture?

My guess is 3 years $35M. Last year will be a club option with a large buyout. Maybe $10M, $10M, $15M (club option) with $5M buyout
jaysfan77
That would make sense, do you think he would have offers from other teams at this point? and again, what would be the value of the pick? I’m thinking a supplemental pick would have a lot more upside, plus is worth a few million.

I guess he has some non-firm offers but they will likely be lowered as teams factor in losing their draft pick

“he’s a player that could cause teams to be skeptical about forfeiting a draft pick in order to sign.”
this comes across to me as a sort of collusion or the reserve clause. teams are not going to offer him a contract fearing they’ll lose a draft pick, which in turn cause exclusive negotiations with one team.
jaysfan77
Yes, I also liked the rumour put out by the Jays today that they were going to offer Zack Grienke a contract… Lmao using the media to the ultimate degree! I’m a jays fan, but they are not signing Grienke, and he’s not coming to Toronto.

Have to agree. Jays need to spend wisely.

That is the nature of the collectively-bargained QO. Players who are borderline candidates to receive one will always be hurt worst if they do.
