I would love to have Shark pitching on my team and one year of poor results doesn’t really change that, the thing that does worry me is was he pitching with an injury he has that mentality and did he damage his arm doing so.

Get at it Padres
aztecmike
Personally, I’d love the Pads to make a run at Leake, though I’m sure the memory of our last signing of a rotation guy in free agency is still fresh in the mind of the front office.
Voice of Reason
Leake? I hope the Padres sign him. A very expensive #4 starter.
Bringbacktheblue
Scott Kazmir make way to much sense for us.

I’d rather not forfeit one of our comp picks to sign a #5 starter…

Shark’s best bet is to find a team with either deep pockets or one that’s already signed a player attached to draft pick compensation, presumably later in the offseason. I doubt as of right now, there are many teams excited about giving him that kind of commitment. It’s cheaper than Bailey and Porcello, but who think those were good signings?

Tigers are a perfect fit. Top 10 protected pick. Need two tier2 starters.

The thing to keep in mind with losing draft picks is that with 16 QO free agents, and only 4 of the clubs with a protected pick likely to sign any of those guys, you’re talking about somewhere around 10 of the picks between #11 and #30 as it stands right now ultimately disappearing. If the Royals sign a FA who costs them the first-rounder, and then they get a comp pick when Gordon signs for an overpay somewhere else, they might actually wind up picking higher than #27, where they sit as of today…

Every other team after the team that gives up a draft pick would move up a slot too so I don’t get your point?
Los Calcetines Rojos
I think what he’s getting at is that teams like Padres and White Sox can benefit greatly from someone signing their players if the majority of the qo players go to teams outside of the top 10. So Sox could have the 10th, and something like the 24-26th pick along with their third rounder which is a lot of high value picks for a team. May be wrong but that’s how i interpreted it
mike156
He’s a complete crap-shoot. He has to go to a team that can afford to pay $80M or more to someone who could have a future that looks a lot like his past. Maybe he will sort it all out and be dominating. And maybe, he will just be the same pitcher he has been–flashes of lights-out, and stretches of mediocrity. $80/5 is a lot to pay for that. Plus the pick.
bobbleheadguru
Is his arm “young” like Boras claimed of Scherzer?
If the Tigers sign him, can he be the #3 receiver for the Lions as well?
longjohnsilver
I still hold out hope the Pirate’s make a move for him. The lost of a draft pick as late as they are in the pecking order isn’t that great of a loss, and they still have their lottery pick. And I believe they can afford him as well, small market team or not.
RedFeather
Seems like a perfect fit for the Cardinals.. Then they can go ahead a sign Justin Upton or Chris Davis.
captainspaulding
Yes, Cardinals please sign him
theprisoner1958
Don Cooper is a one trick pony teaching everyone the cutter. Didn’t work well with Shark. Needs change of scenery.
Voice of Reason
Cooper did shark no favors. Ditto Ventura.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I don’t think anyone is going to want to forfeit their first rounder to sign Jeff Samardzija and his 4.96 ERA
vtadave
So he’s going to come crawling back to the White Sox begging for a one-year deal in late March?
captainspaulding
Thrower, not a pitcher. Won’t change.
xwhyz
Shark goes east to the Orioles is my guess
Voice of Reason
Shark to the Yankees. That’s a perfect fit. And, for once, the Yankees might see some long term value out of a free agent signing.
ellubben
I hope the Cubs avoid him at all costs. I see him going to the Red Sox.
afenton530
I could see the Giants In his future, if it fell into place with an incentive based deal
Willy
Im confused. Other pitchers like Fister, also coming off a bad season, are said to be looking for a 1 year, make-good contract But the Shark, also coming off a bad year, should get a 5 year deal? Sorry but there is no way unless the Shark and his agent are dumb. Sign a 1 year deal in the NL, get your ERA under 3.50, then next year when the free agent class is weak you get that 5 year (or longer) deal for much bigger money.
