I just can’t believe that the NL defending champs would enter the year with Dilson Herrera penciled in at 2B (assuming they do non-tender Tejada). They really need to sign a middle infielder, be it Murphy, Zobrist (best option), Desmond, or someone else.
Ksoto1069
They don’t need Murphy he had and okay year just because of playoffs doesn’t mean he deserves the money he wants. Zobrist is getting old and he’s going to ask for to much. You have to give the younger players a chance to develop you still have Matt Reynolds in triple A you got give them a real chance to make it or break it

Problem is letting youngsters make it or break it, without a net in place, can break the season

I get what hes saying though, Metropolitans want to get back in October and might not want to be patient with a young prospect this year

With a weak shortstop market, Flores is there for the long haul. His glove showed improvement and his bat is better than most shortstops. The Mets need to get either Zobrist or Murphy. If not, Brandon Phillips (in a Cuddyer dump to balance money?) brings better infield defense. Also, with Tejada out I like Zobrist because he’s capable of playing shortstop if Flores were to get injured
rct
Phillips for Cuddyer is interesting. I’d think that the Mets would have to toss in a mid-level prospect as well.
ThorsHammer34
Reds could use a veteran corner outfielder on what essentially becomes a one year deal and would be able to shed Phillips’ contract in a swap. I think a #15 or so prospect to Cincy could get it done. Phillips defense would be welcomed in our middle infield

“The Mets are interested in these six players but expect to be outbid for of them”
Tommet
I predict Zobrist/Murphy/Desmond, with a CF capable OF, setup man, and a bench player.
woodhead1986
sure, if this were a video game. mets would be lucky to add 2 of those pieces. i wish it wasn’t the case but i think the books are still a mess in Flushing
Tommet
I think it’s reasonable for the Mets to get one of those 3 along with an OF, bullpen piece, and a bench guy.
JT19
Its reasonable but don’t expect one of those three, Span and Soria/O’Day/Clippard. If they aim at a veteran on a minor league deal or a cheap major league deal then its possible.
woodhead1986
Murphy, Shawn Kelly and Parra? That could possibly make sense. admittedly thats dependent on Murphy taking a hometown discount.

Man, Tejada can’t catch a…break
Ruben_Tomorrow 2
Actually, he caught a “break.”

I was being ironical

Two guys that haven’t been linked to the Mets I would really like to see on the 2016 roster. Denard Span as the left-handed complement to Lagares. Also would like to see them target Cliff Lee to fill the role of Bartolo Colon and would allow them to deal Niese. Granted, Cliff Lee’s future is in doubt, but if he wants to pitch, I would think he would fit in nicely on a one-year incentive based contract. He is an ultimate competitor and would be an excellent influence on those young arms that are one year away from taking up all five slots in the rotation.
jd396
I think Span is a little too good to be the short end of a platoon OF.
Out of place Met fan
Would be the long end, since Lageres has struggled with RH. But your point is valid
Ksoto1069
You saying grab cliff lee would be ridiculous that guy wouldn’t fit with the mets they need get rid of Murphy and look for someone else just because he a great playoff don’t forget he had an okay year

“Let’s not outbid anybody. Let’s just sit back and trade prospects mid season if we are in contention.”
Not exactly a great idea.
woodhead1986
for the players the mets are looking at, none of the deserve to be paid the way theyre going to be. its not like they’re going to overpay and get a price or heyward caliber talent (not that im saying they should pursue either guy) the mid-tier guys are just not worth the money. look at how awful Cuddyer’s deal panned out. giving up a pick and overpaying for a player like Desmond, or just plain overpaying for an old guy like Zobrist just doesn’t make any sense. The only way they sign a CF is if lagares becomes a well 4th OF. Desmond is too pricey, Zobrist will want too many years, O’day will price himself out as well. If anything I think they sign Soria or Clippard, maybe Gerardo Parra and retain kelly johnson and MAYBE Murphy but i doubt it.
jd396
When you say “overpaying” do you mean the players you mention are not worth what they’re going to get, or that the Mets shouldn’t pay what it’s going to take to bring in players of that caliber?
woodhead1986
For guys like Price or Heyward you overpay but your getting a high value player, and while mega deals always become hard to swallow at some point in the contract’s life span, you typically get a few seasons of elite production which make the overall deal acceptable. I think to get a guy like Desmond or even Zobrist you would have to overpay because of the robust market they are going to have, and winning the bid on those guys would mean paying them more then they’re worth. Or to say it another way, those players are not worth what they’re going to get and I don’t think the Mets will go to the lengths needed to sign them.

Has the ship sailed with Daniel Murphy?
jkunkle
Come on Mets!! I got you signing Zo in the contest.
