I will defend Owings offensive struggles by blaming the hitting coaches. They admittedly changed his swing, which effected his approach, due to shoulder concerns. If they can find a trade partner for Tomas, it wouldn’t break my heart and I don’t think his absence would hurt the D-Backs as Peralta proved to be a force hitting behind Goldschmidt for a majority of the second half. As far as the rotation goes, it’d be nice to add a veteran or see if Hudson can make a run at the rotation this Spring.

I don’t think anyone is interested in forfeiting their first rounder for Jeff Samardzija. And the D-Backs (or anyone for that matter) should only trade for Chapman at this point under the condition that he agrees to an extension.

I still wonder how the Angels and D’backs line up in a Hill for CJ Wilson trade. Ari gets the pitching and veteran presence with a small commitment as far as years go and the Angels get help at 2B/3B that they have a massive hole at. They both have bad contracts so the swap helps both teams while not adding any additional payroll. I would assume that LAA might need to kick in a little $ as CJ is on contract for 2 more years, but the rest of this trade makes too much sense right?

I would agree with that but Wilson also has one more year and would be coming off elbow surgery to remove bone spurs. Wilson is also scheduled to make $20 million while Hill will only make $12 million. If Anaheim is willing to kick in another player plus $6 million, I’m good.

This is a trade I suggested when the Angels traded away Kendrick, before Hill showed yet another year of significant aging. Despite the disparity in contracts, Wilson is a clear upgrade to the Diamondbacks’ rotation, an so might be worth Arizona simply taking on the extra dollars. Yes, Wilson is coming back from surgery, but other than Corbin (and perhaps Ray), Wilson is still a clearly better pitcher than any other current member of the rotation.
They are going to ahve to spend money in order to upgrade pitching. Most candidates are going to get a minimum of three years. Some of the better ones will get 4-5 years somewhere. Wilson comes with the added “bonus” of being gone at the end of the 2016 season. That’s an extra year for arms like Shipley, Lopez, and Young to mature without committing big dollars to 2017 and beyond.

Dbacks currently have a very good core of players. Only holes for position players are at 3B and 2B where strikeouts are just too frequent. Lamb showed he could hit early in 2015. Owings unquestionably can hit better than he’s showed. Possibly a change in coaching will help these two.
The starting rotation and closer roles are another story with just too many question marks. I think that Hudson ought to be tried as a closer. Ziegler is so valuable coming in earlier in a game when a double play is needed to get out of an inning that he’s almost being wasted starting the ninth inning with no baserunners on. I was surprised that Chacin was optioned out. At $1.8mil I didn’t think that was a much of a cost savings and he did look decent in 2015. IMO both Hernandez and Hellickson can depart and not be missed.
