“Sanchez was originally intended to be a reliever last spring, then became a starter in the wake of Stroman’s injury, struggled enough to be demoted to Triple-A and then returned to thrive in a relief role.”
This isn’t true. He was in competition in Spring with Norris for the 5th spot in the rotation after Stroman, Dickey, Buehrle and Hutchison, with Estrada destined for the bullpen. Once Stroman got injured, the rotation included both Norris and Sanchez.
Secondly, he wasn’t demoted to AAA, he had a couple nice starts, got injured, and then began his rehab assignment. His last start was actually an 8 inning, 2 run (1 earned) win over the Astros. Once on his rehab assignment a month later, it was decided that he would come back in the bullpen, in part because the bullpen sucked, in part because it would get him back sooner, and in part because, I assume, the Jays knew they were making a move for a starting pitcher (his first game back with the team was July 25)

Sanchez was not sent down to the minors in 2015 because he “struggled” or because he was “demoted”, rather he was rehabbing from an injury he experienced while starting. In fact Sanchez pitched four consecutive quality starts before his “demotion”, as you say.

I believe the struggles referred to an ERA that vastly outperformed his peripherals. But, the demotion point is fair — he went down to rehab after a lat injury. I updated that portion.

To be fair, yes, Sanchez was leading the mlb in walks at one point, but he is the type of pitcher that will outperform his peripherals through his career. That 2-Seam action on his fastball is absolutely remarkable.

You’re not allowed to suggest Darren O’Day is a reliever the Jays would target with Jose Bautista still on the team.
jacobyrush25
It’s unfortunate though, because aside from the fact that him and Jose would probably try to kill each other, I would love to have a guy like Darren O’Day on this team.

No pressure, Mr. Shapiro

I can see Sanchez given a chance to be in the starting 5 this year, maybe battling out with Hutch over the 5th spot, although if I were the Jays, I would move Hutch to AAA and give him innings rather than put him in the bullpen. I also think the Jays should have a lefty in the starting 5. Price would of course be ideal, but if he doesn’t come back, Kazmir would be a decent pick up IMO.
The Jays bullpen seemed too predictable, especially once Loup and Cecil were not available. I’d like to see a few different looks and arm angles, and a closer type that could be brought in to work with Osuna, and possibly Sanchez if he doesn’t make the rotation. I heard rumblings of the Rays possibly dealing Boxberger and McGee. I think they would represent the kind of additions that the Jays should be on the lookout for. I’d throw Shawn Kelley on that list too as a FA signing with AL East experience.

If oday and bats were on the same team, id pay just to watch the dugout lol. and Oh my.. pompey, norris and hoffman for carrasco? good thing AA didnt do that.. oh man lol.
Mark 20
If they jays do sign estrada which it looks like they are about to do, a rotation currently of Stroman, Dickey and Estrada is a really nice starting point with Hutch, Sanchez and Osuna battling it out for the 5th spot. Thatll leave one top of the rotation arm needing to be filled via trade or F/A. I would love to see Jordan Zimmerman signed or a trade for Strasburg, although I dont know what the Nats would say about trading stras.

How about trading for Matt Garza, Khris Davis and $6M for Ben Revere and Mitch Nay? This fills two needs for Toronto (LF and starting pitcher) at the cost of roughly $10M while Brewers create a corner OF spot for Santana and get a true CF until Phillips is ready to take over. They also get a much needed 3B prospect added to their farm system.
Mark 20
We dont have a need for a LF and Garza is not good enough in my opinion. He may bounce back but we need a top of the line starter. Revere is a .300 hitter with speed and solid defence.
