I think something like 7/108M with an opt out after 3 seasons could be of interest to both sides.
That values his FA years at 22M a piece (assuming he gets around 20M in arbitration).
The Oregonian
But then he’d just take the opt-out after three years and become a free agent right on schedule, so the D-Backs would really only be buying out his arb years.
Brixton
Ah, thats true.

Maybe a back-loaded deal, same/similar contract could work. Give him a number around his projected arbitration numbers for the first three years and the final four years are backloaded. So its not as black and white as buying out his arb years at an extremely high price.

He has had 1 stong season of his 4…why is everyone soo quick to make him a 9 figure deal?
kman5000
He was on pace for a similar season in 2014 before his hand was broken. He has been on an upward trend since he entered the league. His ability has really shown since being given regular playing time after the departures of Upton, Young, Parra, Trumbo, and Eaton. He’s worth the money and Arizona would be smart to lock him up now and eat up his arbitration years in a deal similar to Goldy’s. I still think 9 figures is a little too much this soon.

Please, Diamondbacks.. Sign him long-term.. He is our future.

I think they will extend goldschmidt before aj if they extend either one at all, which I’m hopeful for.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Isn’t Goldschimdt already extended until 19?
markmc1235
Him and pollock have 3 years left until free agency I believe.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
The Dbacks have an extremely team friendly contract with a 14.5 option in 19. So they essentially bought out two free agent years because if he anything close to what he has done 14.5 is a drop in the bucket
