Very interested in what they agreed to and what that could mean for the chances of signing another starting pitcher, specifically Latos.

With the news that not only will Nicasio be stretched out during Spring Training but he will also compete for a starting spot during spring training tells me that the Pirates probably wont add another starter. Besides possibly extensions, id be shocked if they make any more moves this off-season. Any “savings” and left over money will probably be saved for the trade deadline to give huntington some room to work with
joew
well nice to save the few bucks and thanks to Mark for taking a bit of a cut, makes it easier to keep him around.

And how do you know he “took a cut” when the figure is yet to be disclosed”

the 2:24 update: “Melancon will receive $9.65MM for his final season before free agency, according to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette”
mbgutt
My guess is they try to trade MM. I
Can’t believe you people think the Pirates will add payroll at the deadline. The savings will go
Right into Bob nuttings account. They want to stay competitive not actually try to win.
joew
the pirates have added to payroll often the past few years at the deadline with mixed results.

Chapman not happy with Melancon. If arbitrators look mainly at saves, then his hope for 12.9 million took a hit. Yankees must have known about the settlement before they filed since they are shooting for 9 million. Do teams share this information with each other? MLBPA OK with that?
