Wow. Turning down a QO got a little pricey. 6 million in the first year! Agents know best???

better safe than sorry
total value about the same, guaranteed money is less
less up front risk, club option third year
everybody is happy
……….and you people said it couldn’t be done
Lance
guess Yovani made a mistake in turning down the Rangers QO…..kind of like Cruz did a few years ago. It turned out to be good for Cruz eventually, but the Orioles got one of the great bargains. We’ll see if this is another good example of good bottom feeding for Baltimore.

Agree- I think some of the thinking on QOs is starting to change.
It’s a bird in the hand, two in the bush proposition, especially with the attached draft pick compensation.
Most guys over the past few years have jumped (probably with an agent chirping in their ear) and some have gotten burned, at least in the short term.
On the contrary, Matt Wieters, after a down/injury year, took the O’s $$ and will look to have a “contract year”. As long as he stays healthy it will probably work out for him.
Niekro
I wouldn’t say that he got pretty much what Cuddyer got after turning down the QO when everyone thought he should have taken it, Gallardo got the 3rd year of security though.

Gallardo will have to earn/be healthy to get year 3.
I think lowering the year one $$$ and having a club option for year three is the insurance the Orioles were looking for. Seems like a fair deal for both parties.
Niekro
He has 2 million guaranteed and would re enter free agency probably not on the best terms though, it isn’t the best security but it is 2 million dollars.

My boss could buy me out for 2 million, that’s for sure!

So the Orioles get Fowler and Gallardo for a guaranteed $57 million while the Royals are paying Ian Kennedy $70 million. Not bad.
Niekro
Was going to say the Kennedy deal looks atrocious now
metsoptimist
It always did.

It pays to be an average pitcher in the MLB….
