Adam Rosales was one of my favorite players for the Rangers the last two years, man would play just about anywhere if it meant he could be on the field.

I still don’t get the Ian Desmond signing. The Rangers could have signed a true OF for a similar price or less. David Murphy, Dexter Fowler, etc…

eh desmond has potential upside to turn his bat around and be a right handed force that’s desperately needed in a Lefty heavy lineup, and defensive flexibility potentially filling in in center or on the infield if there is a need. theory was murphy isn’t an adequate mlb outfielder anymore and is left handed. jackson would have been reasonable but doesn’t have the upside. fowler would have been reasonable, but is another big strike out lefty also with a draft pick attached.

Fowler is a switch hitter and struck out in 10% less at bats than desmond.

I think the real thing is that Fowler was looking for a long term deal and Texas has the future outfield in the upper minors (Mazara, Brinson, Gallo). Desmond is just a low financial commitment stop-gap.
CursedRangers
The Angels overreaction to the Rangers taking Beltre from underneath them has all but killed their organization. They tried to show up the Rangers by overpaying for CJ Wilson and Hamilton. Massive blunder on their part. Not to mention the Pujols signing. They won the winter signings for 3 years in a row. Too bad the games are played in the summer.

I think Desmond presents a better offensive option than the true outfielders available. Murphy in particular is a good player, but more of a fourth outfield/platoon player. There was really no worry about Desmond adapting to the outfield defensively and he was cheaper than Fowler, especially in terms of years. Plus he really is a rental this year. Which is nice because next year Brinson and Gallo will be ready to come up.

Murphy would not have been a fit with Hamilton and Choo on the roster and Fielder/Moreland occupying DH/1B slots most of the time. Plus, Gallo and Mazara are advanced prospects that need a path to playing time sooner rather than later, so having another Lefty platoon outfielder that can’t play center didn’t make sense.
Fowler would have been nice (particularly if you have doubts about Delino), but he was more expensive and we were already over budget. Also, you would hope that we are stockpiling cash for a massive international spending spree this summer to take advantage of the current system while it is still in place (and several big spenders are required to sit out), so I imagine every dollar counts.
Despite his slow start, Desmond creates a lot of roster flexibility. When considering our more advanced prospects (Gallo, Mazara, Profar) and our broader farm system, Desmond makes a lot of sense. His presence prevents the need to pull up Profar to split time with Hanser if there is an injury to Andrus/Odor – however, his presence doesn’t block us from doing that if preferred. Also, he provides a potential option for spot duty in center if Delino is unable to maintain the offensive output he contributed last year. He offers all of this while broadly providing a capable RH bat to the middle of the order.

Isn’t Profar coming back pretty soon as well? I know he has been out of action for two years now but he was an absolute stud prospect. I hope he finally finds good health and can fulfill his early promise.

Yeah it will be interesting to see what happens with the Ranger’s roster this year. Profar is ready and if he can prove his health he is a starting MLB shortstop. The problem is Elvis Andrus is locked in at the major league level and is really playing well dating back to the second half of last year. I think Profar gets traded. It’s sad that there is really no place for Jury in Texas but he should bring in a controllable, young pitcher, or use him at the deadline to upgrade the catching situation. Norris is a good player and so is Lucroy so we will just have to see.
