Wow, what happened to Billy Butler? A few years ago, I thought he was well on his way to becoming an elite hitter. Now, he is a left handed hitting specialist.
That is a precipitous drop.

He had a power problem his last couple of years with KC, which is weird. He looks like he could throw a 40 lb sack of potatoes from the mound to the plate.
jrwhite21
Yeah except that he would eat said 40lb bag instead of eating it
jrwhite21
Throwing it* whoops
bringinit247
Looks as if he ate a 40lb sack of taters!
BadCo
Yeah but by the looks of it he has contracted Panda disease …too big a garage on the front of the house !!

6’0″ 160lb DH with an ops+ of 96. Ouch. I am not sure what Beane was thinking with his offseason last year. Trading Donaldson and signing Butler have to be a couple of his biggest blunders of all time. You can’t say it was all money motivated because over the 3 years Butler is under contract Donaldson will only make roughly $3mm more.

Donaldson move really makes Mr Bean look very bad and caused that team to spiral down last year and it was done very late In the off season after several teams inquired about a trade and were turned down. That move will bite him in the backdoor for years to come. He is starting off hot again this year….

Vasquez has pounded out 5 hits the last two days in Pawtucket and will possible force a Henigan trade…possibly to Texas by months end

That Butler deal is still a head-scratcher. The Donaldson trade was made because of, from what I’ve read, some internal issues between Josh and the A’s. The return, however could have been better.
But Butler was already in decline. Perhaps Beane’s scouting department saw something in him they could fix? It still makes no sense. RH-hitting DH-only players are a dime a dozen. AAA is littered with them. Heck, The A’s selected one in the rule 5 draft this year (Jabari Blash) – then promptly traded him away. It is probably time for a complete rebuild, because this A’s team as constructed, isn’t that good.
