I am curious as to what the Twins might expect in return for Ervin Santana (signed through 2019). What do fans of other teams think he could bring? How about Phil Hughes (also through 2019)? I think Hughes would perform better on another team. (My Twins are so incredibly dysfunctional right now.)
rayrayner
Consider what the Padres got for Shields and how much they had to pay to trade him. That would be a starting point for Santana and worse than that for Hughes.
mikeyst13
Not sure Santana would even fetch as much as Shields given his history (and it’s not as if that was a huge haul). He has a PED suspension hanging over his head, rumors that he was not a good clubhouse guy in Atlanta, and a history of arm troubles. All that and he hasn’t pitched that much better than Shields this year.
Voice of Reason
Beltrans a free agent at the end of this year anyhow. They’ll be out of it soon and they should trade him.
Jeff Todd
We’ll see, but either way, Judge isn’t really factoring into it right now with the way he’s performing.
eggy
Why didn’t Lucas giolito or Ho Crawford make the list
eggy
Why does auto correct turn jp into ho
Brixton
Why would Crawford? If he got called up, who would that add/subtract from the trade market? Freddy Galvis? Thats insignificant.
For Giolito, the Nats don’t necessarily have to go get a starter, and adding Giolito doesn’t necessarily push any starter onto the trade market.
jmzy23
Why don’t you proofread?
Jeff Todd
Ha. See response to other commenter. Just don’t see a real tie to the deadline.
drazthegr8 2
Giolito
eggy
Giolito would free up Roark or Gonzalez and Crawford would free up Hernandez or galvis
Jeff Todd
Don’t see Nats rolling dice on Giolito when he hasn’t been killing at Double-A only to trade a reliable arm. More likely an option down the line if there’s an injury, for me.
As for JP … considered, but it’s a fairly tenuous connection to the trade market since neither of the current middle infielders is doing much.
gofish 2
Austin Voth has been pitching very well at AAA for the Nationals. My opinion, but he is more deserving of a promotion more than Giolito. Not sure how much of an upgrade Voth would be over someone like Roark, though.
Jeff Todd
I don’t see any way he is pushing Roark out of the rotation unless Tanner really falls off, but I tend to agree that Voth would likely be ahead of Giolito if there’s a need for a couple spot starts.

Last 3 GS: 19IP, 3QS, 1.42ERA/1.05WHIP, 9.5k/9, 2.8bb/9 LG
Last 3 GS: 18IP, 2QS, 3.00ERA/1.00WHIP, 7.5k/9, 2.5bb/9 AV
Recent turning point might mean something. The start before this run for LG was good too but only 5IP. Have the Nats actively allowed him to go more IP/GS since May 25?

SD trades Drew Pomeranz to TEX for Joey Gallo, etc

That was the dumbest thing I’ve read on the internet today
Ray Ray
Who are the “these two” mentioned in the Albert Almora blurb? I assume there was a second Cub originally included but cut due to a numbers game. Either that or maybe Almora has developed a Sandoval-type eating disorder.
chesteraarthur
Wilson Contreras
rayrayner
Willson Contreras. I imagine he’ll probably get the bulk of catching duties in 2017.
Jeff Todd
Yeah, I decided to drop Contreras from the official listing since he doesn’t much factor into the trade market, but I still mentioned him. Fixed it.
cardoso97
How about Anthony Alford?
kent814
How would he affect the trade market? Tor tradeable OF is a rf and alford is a cf
Jeff Todd
Hitting terribly at High-A and just 21. Not a promotion candidate.
sacball
I would think Ryon Healy gets called up long before Matt Chapman does
togaman
Singleton?…. I would think that is not going to happen and he will be a DFA candidate unless Houston finds a taker using him as a trade chip.. Luhnow has to justify the big $ $8-10 mm contract given him. I suspect Houston would have to pay half of more of his remaining contract if Singleton is traded?
kent814
Im sorry but a 8-10 million contract for a 24? yo former top prospect is mega cheap
Ray Ray
It isn’t mega-cheap compared to the minor league salary that he would be receiving without that extension or the minimum salary that he would get upon a call up. It is actually 4 times the salary he “should” be getting IF he was in the majors the entire season and many, many times the salary he “should” be getting in the minors.
Jeff Todd
It’s a sunk cost, and not that expensive. Don’t see why he wouldn’t get a chance again at some point — he’s hitting just fine at Triple-A.
JayJayXV
If Rangers wanna keep Adrian Beltre and not use Gallo they he should be, hey the Mets need a Third Baseman over here! Wright’s injuries aren’t looking promising for his career. We need a good (Soon-to-Be) Long-Term Third Baseman for our Future. He’ll fit great in New York.
tobyharrah1977
What would the Mets offer in return?
Math&Baseball
Gallo to the mets for matz, montero/wheeler 1 of the 2, nimmo. Dont see the rangers trading him unless its that kinda package….which doubt the mets go ok!
davidcoonce74
If Texas could get matz and wheeler for gallo they’d be foolish to turn that down. However, I think Texas is going to eventually have to bite the bullet and play Gallo over Fielder and Moreland at first, rather than trade him. I doubt the Mets deal Matz, though.
ThatGuy 2
Indians front office ain’t bitting… Also, 15 player trade!
bravesfan 7
Wut
southi
No matter how many times you say it there is zero chance of that trade happening.
HammySosa
Haha 15 player trades would make any team scary in playoffs
therealryan
I feel like you’re onto something here, but each team probably needs to add a few more peices to really bring this together. I’m thinking the Braves would need to add another prospect or two and several big leaguers, while the Indians would need to add another 4-5 prospects to make this really work. You can come up with the names you see fit.
chesteraarthur
Should probably get a third team involved too
Ken M.
Call up Gallo and give him some spot light. The Yankees want him for Chapman.
Jasonrp
please tell me youre joking. Chapman for Gallo is a joke. Rangers dont need bullpen arms for one especially not at the expense of Gallo for 1 year of Chapman.
chuckn9ne
I assume the trade being mentioned got deleted… Lol
Jeff Todd
You didn’t want to read it anyway, trust me.
eggy
Lol to the nth degree

Great topic for an article.
bravosfan4life
How do you leave Swanson out
Jeff Todd
Because there’s no deadline impact, which was the point of the post. I’m not just listing top prospects that could get a call-up this year.
Unless an Aybar DFA counts …
cxcx
“Youngsters like Carlos Correa, Kyle Schwarber, Steven Matz, Michael Conforto, and Stephen Piscotty all played significant roles for organizations that made the post-season. And others — Miguel Sano, Joe Ross, Aaron Nola, Luis Severino, Ketel Marte — were quality performers at the game’s highest level.”
I would argue that Severino more belongs in the first group.
Jeff Todd
Oh yeah. This is what I get for breaking them into two groups without looking closely.
Math&Baseball
Well with this list will there be a list of what teams could theoretically do in trades with the people being pushed out of town.
HarveyD82
Bucs need more than rotation hel, they need bullpeb help too. Seems like they are playing for 2017 rather than making run for this year…
jimmyz
The rotation call ups will have a trickle down effect on the bullpen. Pretty likely Nicasio moves to the bullpen to assume the role of being capable of throwing multiple innings out of the pen or be put in a late inning if Feliz, Watson or Melancon need rest. That’s why he was signed in the first place before pitching lights out at spring training and earning a spot in the rotation.
birch696969
The Reds trade Bruce and Cozart to the White Sox for Anderson and others. I don’t know the White Sox farm system but the Reds are rebuilding.
Los Calcetines Rojos
Yeah, that has 0% chance of ever happening. Doesn’t matter if they’re rebuilding or not Cozart and Bruce doesn’t equal Tim Anderson +
daveinmp
The most obvious guy being held back is Josh Hader by the Brewers. He’d likely be the Brewers 2nd best starter right now, and he’s still toiling in AA where he has yet to allow more than one run in any start.. Granted they could be keeping him away from Colorado Springs so that’s why he’s still in AA, but lefties are 3 for 41 off him (all singles) with 22 strikeouts. At worst he’d be a lockdown lefty specialist out of the pen. Brewers aren’t doing all that badly but they aren’t even trying to win. Keeping Hader down is an example of just that. If I were his agent, I’d be raising heck.
Jorge Soler Powered
This article is talking about the playoffs. No matter what move the Brewers make, it won’t matter.
Los Calcetines Rojos
actually this article is about potential call ups that would impact the trade deadline. Last I checked the reds and padres aren’t making the playoffs or is this you being ignorant because he’s a brewers fan?
