Rays need to stock their farm. Sell all non-Longoria players you can get good value for and retool. Inexperienced kids can’t do worse than this 2016 squad. Get a new manager while your at it.
krillin
I agree with you

I think it’s time for the Rays to think about moving Longo. They don’t look like a team ready to compete over the next couple of years and with his affordable contract, he still has huge value.
I would see how serious the Indians are at making a run and try to build a package around their AA OFers and some of their low minors pitching. Longoria would shore up 3B for them long term and add another middle of the order bat to help lengthen their lineup for the playoffs, while adding another piece to their core for future runs. He would also give them the best left side infield in the AL and could be that missing piece to push them over the top in a deep AL. The Rays could add Xavier Cedeno, who is also under long term control and fills another position of need for the Tribe.
krillin
That would be a sad sad day for the Rays. That would almost be like the Yanks trading Jeter, or the Braves trading Chipper. Although it makes sense, I think the Rays would lose quite a bit of ticket sales over that move in the short run. However, a WS title would bring in more than Longoria himself ever would.
RunDMC
I think the Rays tickets sales are at the point of – it can’t get much worse. It’s hilarious that the only worse team in average attendance in MLB is the hottest team in MLB (CLE) with a 12-game winning streak. I guess CLE is still watching reruns of the championship to support their Tribe. Can Lebron hit? A: better than MJ…
dlevin11
Ticket sales don’t matter. Rays need a stadium like Marlins have but in Tampa Bay. If they build it fans will come. Otherwise looks like a move to Las Vegas in their future.
krillin
Ticket sales have to matter some. I do agree about the stadium though.
RunDMC
There’s a lot more movement to getting a new stadium in Tampa. They reportedly have kept an eye on the Braves stadium project as a prototype because its ability to control the fan experience by managing all-year retail spaces on-site and incorporating it within the community.

Braves could trade Tooki Toussaint for Matt Moore. Tampa saves 30 mil.
Gogerty
Think that could be enough? Wouldn’t argue, but would think almost need two Touki types.
RunDMC
Touki and Ricardo Sanchez? Both have a lot of upside and Touki is starting to hone it in recently. Not sure if Moore is who I’d use these on.
therealryan
I cannot possibly see the Rays trading Moore for two pitchers who are struggling in A ball and have never had any success in pro ball.
krillin
I don’t think the Braves are looking for a Matt Moore type player right now
petfoodfella
He’s a pitcher, Braves are interested.

RunDMC
Affordable pitcher with top-of-the-rotation stuff when healthy, working his way from TJ surgery (like many ATL pitchers), southpaw with great strikeout=to-walk ratio. If ATL does hold onto Teheran, Moore would be a great compliment over the next 3 years giving time for some arms to mature and take spots. Could always move Moore if young pitching needs spots. Great problem to have.
krillin
Ha, isn’t that the freaking truth. It is like they have this hope that they can have the rotation they once had.
krillin
As always, DMC, you know your stuff. Good call

Moore’s era is 4.67 according to bbref, not 5.04.
eggy
Orioles looking for a lefty starter takes a lot for it to happen tho
bigjonliljon
Good call

Pirates need to be all over this. Moore is an upgrade over Niese, Locke, and even Liriano at this point. Maybe a package of Alen Hanson, Jose Osuna, and perhaps Willy Garcia or maybe even Jeff Locke?
A 2017 rotation of Cole, Tallion, Glasnow, Moore, and Kuhl (If Liriano is dealt) could be one of the best young rotations in the league.
Ray Ray
Until Cole needs to be dealt. He probably isn’t gong to be resigning in Pitt and they will likely trade him sooner rather than later because his arb years will be expensive.
ronnsnow
Cole is controlled through 2029, he’s not getting traded any time soon. Especially with Cutch coming off the books soon.

2019*

Rays have some good prospects that aren’t too far away what you mean rays don’t contend for a few years
krillin
The Rays do seem to always surprise with their low budget. I would not be surprised if they compete pretty soon
therealryan
The Rays are in the middle of their third straight poor and disappointing season. They’ve made an organizational shift to add power and be more aggressive on offense. Unfortunately, it looks like it was at the expense of their defense and without a marked improvement on the offense, the team now looks worse than any time since the Devil Ray days. While they do have some promising prospects coming up, none are really ready to be impact players this year or next.
If the Rays are going to start selling other players, I think they should also seriously consider moving Longoria while he still has a ton of value. The Rays would get multiple high ceiling prospects in return and look to match up any return with their next wave of prospects. Now, I wouldn’t trade him just to trade him. He is still very affordable and productive, so the Rays would need to get a huge package in return. However, if they can get a nice mix of high upside, upper minor league position players and low level pitchers with upside, they should take it.
C H.
I do believe the Rays sell this year but I don’t think it will be the fire sale narrative everyone is trying to push. They’re core is solid and they’ve just gotten horrible results from the rotation which was supposed to be a strength, players like Dickerson who are underperforming, and injuries.
I think they should deal 1-2 pitchers, some bullpen pieces, and Morrison, Miller, or Pearce. Other than that the core is solid and why not take advantage of the sellers market and get some desperate teams to overpay? Reload for next year.
rangerfan23
As a Rangers fan, Tampa bay needs a couple players from our farm system to help them out and we want Matt Moore and every bullpen help we can get lol
RunDMC
As a Braves fan, we need a couple players from your system….
CursedRangers
Getting Moore would allow Holland to be a long reliever once everyone is healthy (including Holland).
seamaholic 2
Not that he has Moore’s upside, but another name that might come up is Jorge de la Rosa, who has looked a lot better his last few starts as well (ignore that season-long ERA). Rockies have a very good arm in AAA waiting for his chance, and de la Rosa is a pure rental. Shouldn’t take a lot to get.
bravesguru
Braves would like to receive Matt Moore and Steve Sousa from the Rays for Mike Foltynewicz, Rob (no-Hitter) Wooten and Nick Markakis.
