Padres viewed Fulmer as a reliever long term supposedly. We will see if they were right on that over time
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yeah plus depending on how the draft turns out, it will be interesting to see if standing pat at the deadline last year and acquiring extra picks was the right choice.
Math&Baseball
Padres made the right decision. Recouping the draft pick will restock the farm. 3 1st rounders, 6 picks in the top 3 rounds, and expected to bust open the market for international signings.
Fulmer is good, but he’s a 2-3 kind of guy. Padres can always find pitching, hell lool at friedrich pomeranz ross etc. Our rotation has had throw aways for years that have been productive. What we cant find is hitters. 3 1sts i expect preller to draft some hitters between the 1st and 3rd rounds.
Last year they drafted 5 pitchers between the 2nd and 10th round and picked up logan allen in the kimbrel trade. Time to add some offense.
chesteraarthur
Do you have a link to that? I’d be interested in reading their thoughts behind that.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
They’re certainly not alone in that thinking but I have a hard time believing that the 25th pick in the upcoming draft has more value than Michael Fulmer.

The Cardinals are pretty stacked (in terms of people who can actually start) they could deal Adams and move Carpenter or Peralta to 1B?
Gogerty
The Cards organization has always been great in that respect. Any tune an injury happen, the can replenish with someone from AAA without worry.
Ted
Folks that watch the Cardinals regularly — is Diaz legit with the bat? His April was unbelievable, but as you’d expect his May saw some regression when he hit a more pedestrian .267/.304/.419, with league average defense. Should we just chalk that April up to a ridiculous BABIP and little else?
smelliott00
Obviously some regression was expected, you can’t expect anyone to continue hitting .400 over a whole season. And as is seen with most rookies, the pitchers will adjust to them. But Diaz is legit. He struggled at the beginning of May as pitchers began to pith him differently, but Diaz has adjusted back and began heating up again towards the end of May. As a guy who hits the ball to all fields, has good speed, and sneaky pop, I expect him to be a guy who can stick around, especially if he can shore up his defensive shortcomings.
TheMichigan
He’s legit, but in all honesty no one could sustain that ridiculous BABIP and AVG, he’s like Trevor story without the pop really

I’ve been wondering the same thing. He doesn’t really have the minor league track record to support the results he’s been getting at the majors this season. And he leads the majors in errors so far this season so I would say calling his defense league average is generous.
brodafett
He doesn’t have the track record because of certain situations. He defected from Cuba to Mexico and didn’t play baseball for a couple of years, I believe, and because of that his first seasom in the minors was him getting back into the game and shaking off rust. Then he was hurt in the minors which impacted him and slowed his development. In the last year he has raked so it isn’t just a hot may, but a hot almost 12 months. As for his defense have you watched him play? It is very difficult to evaluate his defense becaude he does have the most errors, but he also makes some of the most amazing web gems you’ll see. His problem is the easy plays he’s rushed on or usef bad mechanics which have caused his errors. Howevet, when it’s a bang bang talent and instinct play he has shown a very slick glove. He just needs to settle down on the more routine plays and he has the potential to be a good defensive player, not just a league average one. Go youtube some videos on somw of the great plays he’s made this year. You might see what I’m talking about.
smelliott00
He doesn’t have the minor league numbers to back it up, but if you dig a little deeper it makes sense. After leaving Cuba for the United States, Diaz was out of organized baseball for over a year. His first couple years playing professional baseball were spent finding his footing. Last season, his third year, there was marked improvement in AA and during the second half of the season, he hit .350 plus with a good slugging percentage at AA and AAA. That success has continued through this year, even at the big league level.

First, awesome way to start a question. I’m sure as most homers do, I watch every inning I can. Aledmys is a curious case. Lots of hype before signing, almost an afterthought after his first season and a half in the system, then turned in a very impressive 2ND half if AAA ball last year, and now to his explosive arrival in the Show. Obviously as pointed out above, his April was unsustainable. Having said that, his bat is legit. That’s never been the worry. He still needs a lot of defensive growth. What the numbers won’t tell you is that he’ll pull a boneheaded move now and again, or can’t seem to handle a routine DP flip to second, etc. Now, don’t jump down my throat, guys. He’s young and a rookie. I get that. Any Cards fan will tell you though; Jose Oquendo out for the season as 3rd base coach is a HUGE loss. Anyone ever wonder how Peralta maintained a halfway decent defensive grade? Jose positioned him after every pitch. Notice he never had to make diving attempts, or stretch too much? How the ball seemed to just be hit where he was? That is Jose Oquendo’s handiwork, my friends. How he is not in charge of a big league club is baffling to me. I thought it was his job after Larussa split. My point being being that when/if Oquendo makes it back, Aledmys will benefit greatly.

Not a chance the D’Backs are able to move Grienke’s contract, unless its a Grienke for Ryan Howard swap.
Brixton
How is owed barely 30M. Greinke is owed 200M
jp08
Ditto what Brixton said, maybe Boston would consider unloading panda and his contract along with prospects for Greinke, but its such a massive contract to move. It would need another large contract to close the gap before the talent swap would need to be dealt with.
GRINGOMHT
And thre is no way the D-backs want a 37 year old free swinging career .259 hitter.

Isn’t Diaz only signed through 2017 (possibly part of ’18 too?), or am I missing something? 4 year deal and he played 17 games in AA in 2014…
Ted
He’s still under Cardinals’ control for 6 years of MLB service time, including his arbitration years. He has a major league deal covering him now, but won’t be eligible for free agency even once that contract ends, unless he negotiated that into his contract as Puig did. That’s what I gather from this article (it’s an SBNation blog) addressing the situation: vivaelbirdos.com/2014/3/13/5502472/when-will-aledm…
37santobanks
Thanks, Ted! That does help explain things.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Lol. Greinke signed with the Diamondbacks because they offered him the most money. If no one else thought he was worth all that money, why would they want to trade for him (and his contract) now?
Dookie Howser, MD
Arizona could eat some salary
GRINGOMHT
That is not true the Dodgers and Giants offered more but Greinke want to be a part of a future contending team.
Phillies2017
Diamondbacks should deal Herrmann

Same Michael Fulmer that’s no-hitting the Angels as we speak?!!? Ha
fanofcards
Wouldn’t you think, given the abundance of average-a little above average players the Cardinals have, plus, the abundance of Money they have saved up, that the Cardinals General Manager would be on the hot seat unless he could either pull off a trade for a young, proven, super star at the trade deadline??? He’s been all talk and no do for ever. Sure, he’s come in 2nd a lot, but never has had the skills, or relationships that Jockerty or Herzog and for that matter even Dal Maxwell, to achieve a deal for real Super stars. The Cards could certainly use the leadership and abilities of a person like a Mike Trout. Someone is going to get him in the real near future. Why not the Cardinals?? The Angels system is depleted. Why not make a run at him with the top draft picks this year, a couple of top minor league pitchers and players, and some current 40 man roster depth the Cards currently have. He’d fit extremely well in the Cards line up in both Center Field and clean up hitter.
markmc1235
I think there is a better chance of Kate Upton dating me than greinke getting traded.
