Would it be totally crazy for Miami and/or a trading partner such as SD or OAK to trade Dietrich for an SP one-for-one upon Gordon’s return from his PED suspension?
baseballjunkie68
Yes, because the way Dee Gordon’s suspension is come playoff time if the Marlins were a playoff team they wouldn’t have gordon or Dietrich.

Dietrich is a good player but he’s not a game changer he’s more of a comp piece. If a trade were to occur the Rangers/Dodger/Red Soxs would have extremely more valuable packages.

I think Pomeranz would be out of the Marlins reach, it would probably cost them Kolek, Naylor & another mid level prospect. But a guy like Andrew Cashner is a free agent at season’s end who has been banged up here and there throughout the season could be had for cheap. The Padres have already done their due diligence scouting Miami’s system because of the Rodney trade, I could see them working out another for Cashner in the next week to ten days.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s probably not going to end well. Cashner appears better suited for the relief role he flourished in.

totally crazy

Until the Fish have something to trade, look at them getting a warm body, not a premiere name.

As wishful as Marlins’ fans may be, there is one glaring issue they need to come to terms with: You will not be able to resign Fernandez. It has less to do with Fernandez and more to do with Scott Boras (that’s the silver lining here but he’s going to be offered a mega deal that your owner can’t match. Get what you can before he becomes a rental.

I agree on the Fernandez/extension/Boras issue but you don’t make that deal in season. That is a trade you make offseason and then build your team thru the return.
Being in the position they are you ride Fernandez out and try to catch lightning in a bottle and buy low. They missed the boat on Bud Norris. He would have been perfect. Now I could see Ervin Santana or maybe a Matt Garza type guy going there and hope for the best. Maybe Ricky Nolasco goes back.

Agreed 100%. Mike Hill needs to be looking for pitchers who could be had for (mostly) salary relief and the Twins have a couple of those guys.

It’s tough to look at the Marlins and anticipate long term success as Scott Boras will obviously not allow the them to resign Fernandez. It makes you ponder on the thought of flipping him at some point (when that is, I’m not sure) and acquiring a kings ransom. In the end, their front office is going to mess this up anyways

I think we can all agree that it will be more than a long shot for the marlins to retain Jose Fernandez long term.. But that has nothin to do with their need for a 5th rotation guy rite now. The marlins would be stupid to deal Fernandez this season being the position they are in, he is under team control thru the 2018 season and the fish have their second best record at the AS break in team history… They defiantly have the talent to make a strong playoff push with the help of another piece or two if you ask me.. They have been playing some good consistent baseball an are 6 games over .500 despite playing in arguably one of the best divisions in baseball. Trading Derek Deitrich would not be smart either, since they will lose Dee Gordon for the playoffs if they were to make it, and i see Dietrich as a replacement for Martin Prado next year at 3rd base since they will most likely lose Prado to free agency after this year and Gordon will be back to take over 2nd base. As for the rotation spot, the addition of either Jake Odorizzi or Drew Pomeranz would be ideal an would defiantly give them the push they need to be a wild card contender come playoff time but i see both as very unlikely due to their weak farm system, them not willing to part with any of their core pieces and their track record of being very cheap… They however still need someone to fill that 5th spot an i don’t believe anyone in their minors system has what it takes to help them content this year. If they are smart they will figure out a deal to add someone like a Rich Hill or a veteran starter to eat up some innings even if it is a rental for the remainder of the season because it is obvious the time to win is now for this Miami club that for once needs to take a step forward instead of two steps back, they are young an talented enough an have enough control on most of the team where they could make some noise within the next two seasons. I curious to see what they can do to make a winner down in South Florida before they lose some keys pieces that they will probably not be able to afford once eligible for free agency…As for trading Jose I personally would hang on to him at least thru 2017.. An if they are unable to contend by then, then trade him for a nice package of prospects in the off season and move on.. For once the Marlins have something they can win with and a coach that knows who to do it, hopefully Jeffery Loria realizes what he has an makes the right decisions… Go Fish!!
