nova should get big bucks
pinballwizard1969
And based on his history the acquiring team will regret it shortly thereafter. Ask the Twins organization if they regret extending Phil Hughes after his 1 good year in 2014.
Tager
Nova can play well and has always had some talent. The problem the Yankees have and many of their pitchers is its NYC and a hitter friendly park. Pressure cooker, plus AL East, plus a short porch equals struggles for many pitchers. Nova would be smart to stay in Pittsburgh.
takeyourbase
Hughes got hurt. He was also trying to pitch through it. So prior to that, worth every penny of an extension.
pinballwizard1969
Color me surprised that Hughes suffered an injury. Anyone that has followed his career should know that comes as NO surprise. That’s his history with baseball. Truth is at least in my opinion Hughes capitalized on a fantastic 2014 season and hasn’t been worth the extension he’s signed after that.
ClancyJ
Terry Ryan was foolish to extend Hughes 1 year into a 3 year 24 million dollar deal. Was a nice contract, could have let him play through at least until the end of the 2nd year before entertaining an extension.
BoldyMinnesota
But ask the jays how they like Happ. It goes both ways, it just might not work out for the better more often
A-Rod the GOAT
None of those current veteran options are worth it for the Yankees. See if you can get some return for Gardner, outright Ackley, and let the kids get a chance (obviously there’s nothing you can do with Ellsbury and his horrendous contract)
dobsonel
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Gardner when packaged with guys like Ref and Romine could bring back a nice controllable starter. I’m not saying a future ace, but most definately a young #2/3 type of guy.
Tager
You have a good point. A quality hitting utility player that really can’t find a home in NY and may flourish elsewhere when given an opportunity, a serviceable youngish catcher, and Gardy would be a pretty decent pick up for someone. I also could see dealing another blocked outfielder like Jake Cave or Mason Williams.
jakem59
That wouldn’t even be close to enough for a 2/3 starter especially one with any control left. Refsnyder holds very little value as a bad defender with no home and a slightly below average bat and Romine and Gardner are essentially negatives. Neither are good defenders, Romine is a ghost at the plate, and Gardner isn’t aging well plus he has two years at $24MM left on his contract. You can’t trade table scraps for a steak dinner.
peteralt
I agree with u. No one wanted Gardner last year and this year was horrendous. He stinks
rmullig2
The Cubs wanted Gardner for Castro. The Yankees refused. That is how Warren got shipped to Chicago.
jakem59
The rumor had it the other way around, Cubs said “No” to Gardner, and that whole Gardner/Castro deal was debunked almost immediately and then never heard of again.
southi
I’m not saying that a package of Gardner, Refsnyder, and Romine wouldn’t have some worth to the right team, but I doubt it would bring back a very significant prospect. I could be wrong but I was thinking that Gardner has been on the block for at least a couple of seasons and his speed and OPS indicates he very well may be declining. Refsnyder is at best a utility infield type that has never showed (even in the minors) much power or above average defense. Romine may have without much doubt just experienced his best season, but he is obviously a back up catcher with little bat (but truthfully the overall state of catcher in the majors is very poor currently with very few exceptions).
I just don’t see even the combination of them bringing a young #2/#3 type guy unless you talking about a high risk prospect that is in A ball. Of course I’ve been wrong before.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Orioles would be remiss if they did not offer Wieters a QO
You can’t just let him go for free.
However, for right now, the O’s and Wieters need to concern themselves with winning the last three games and getting that Wild Card.
costergaard2
I don’t know if he’s worth a QO, he had a subpar year. Is he done ?
johnsilver
Read Hayman’s article several hours earlier today and it was kind of comical with regards to what Boras is apparently seeking for Weiters. He tried that game with Varitek when he was nearing the finish line also.
If not read the O’s article at Heyman’s, it’s worth the read “The Orioles and Weiters are tens of millions apart on an extension” and he’s seeking a Martin/McCann type deal. Shocking for Boras huh? A guy who hasn’t hit, pre injury shooting for the moon and getting older? Sound familiar?
Nothing against Weiters himself, but he’s getting fed VERY poor advice for a to be 31yo player, who hasn’t hit for 3 seasons.
O's Fan_JMiller
Chance Sisco/Caleb Joseph will step in next year at C for the O’s…. save some $$$ for the O’s when Weiters leaves…. the O’s will extend the qualifying offer for Trumbo (he won’t accept)…. Mancini will step in if they don’t come to agreement with Alvarez (Mancini can play 1st,maybe RF… Davis can play RF – Davis is signed long term, or they can alternate the 1B/RF position)…. O’s need to allocate the $$$$ to Machado long term, just surpass the Giancarlo Stanton deal, Machado is the real deal at his age
TheMichigan
If anything Mancini would be in RF primarily, Davis isn’t a very good outfielder, never was. I don’t see a reason why he’d ever be.
dwilson10
The O’s need to let Wieters walk, Joseph can do just as good for a lot less money. Put the extra money towards some pitching and an outfield upgrade. Maybe try and target Cespedes or Reddick for outfield and Hill for pitching.
BoldyMinnesota
Even though rbi is a useless stat, Joseph might be the first player ever to not have one when he’s had over 100 plate appearances. He could not do as good as wieters.
joeflaccosunibrow
Are you kidding me? Target Hill for pitching? Wow! Maybe we can sign Mussina or Clemens while we’re at it. Hill was here for a cup of coffee and couldn’t get ofd Richie Bancell’s table.
That said, I like me some Weiters but he’s not worth the money and dare I say that I don’t like the games that he calls. I think our pitchers do as good or better without him. He is ok defensively with a great arm. Again, I’d rather see the money put to pitching. Trumbo will want too much money. We need a steady flow of cheap prospects to offset the money spent on free agents. I sure hope Mancini is that answer. We need to prepare for Machado.
Dookie Howser, MD
The Orioles should target a younger pitcher so they can screw up their mechanics at an earlier age.

Like Zach Britton?
pinballwizard1969
Sorry I just don’t see the Yankees keeping Dustin Ackley and tendering him a contract. As a 3rd year arbitration player even with just a small raise after being injured the entire year he still would be expected to make about $3.5MM in 2017. I just don’t see the Yankees paying that when there are so many other internal options.
dobsonel
Good call. They need that money to make a run at Chapman and still stay under the luxury tax this year to reset the clock (which has been their plan for a few years.) I don’t think Ackley is even tradable in a package deal at this point.
pinballwizard1969
I agree I don’t see a team wanting him in a trade. At most I think Ackley is a “:throw in” if that in any package deal. But I really think the Yankees just cut him lose.
jonscriff
Possibly non-tender him and sign him to a minor league contract
Tager
Ackley has little to no value. He’s 28, oft injured, and has never really shown anything warranting a second overall pick. Nontender for sure. They don’t need him for outfield depth and Torreyes has been a pretty solid backup for the infield. Even as a throw in, what value does he bring to a new team?
dkjines
just pray you dont sign jaime garcia,he cant leave soon enough
staypuft
He used to be serviceable. What happened this year- has he been affected by the Cards bad defense this year? Or is he just terrible?
I noticed his SO9 and BB9 are both above career norms, as are HR9. I wonder if he’s trying to strikeout my people and nibbling, to keep the ball in play less since the defense is somewhat shaky?
krillin
There as been a lot of talk about Atlanta going after Weiters. I just looked up his numbers, and I hope the Braves only go after him if they can get some type of hometown discount or something. But with Ramos injured I don’t see that happening. I think a Combo of Flowers and Recker will be just as effective and be much cheaper.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I think what Nova meant by that comment is that, while he has genuinely enjoyed his time in Pittsburgh and is not opposed to re-signing with the Pirates, he has every intention of testing the open market this offseason and will take the biggest contract he is offered, regardless of whether or not that comes from the Pirates.
charlie big
I think that the O’s better save there money if they want to keep Manny. There will be plenty of others interested in him and willing to pay the $$$$$.
