While only Donaldson comes close to Trout, Donaldson was acquired for a top 50 prospect, a high ceiling INF who refused (and continues to refuse) to fix the issues in his game, a decent mid-rotation guy and a horrible pitcher Beane really wanted for many months, for reasons no one on the planet can possibly imagine.
If there was ever a cryface Jordan trade, that is it. Swanson might be worse, but that is seriously a massive, massive “WHYYYYYY” trade. Boston made Beane an offer and he turned them down. He was not shopping Donaldson. There absolutely has to be other, outside measures at play there. How does one trade the second best player in the game for peanuts and why does he trade him without declaring him on the table for every team to try an outbid each other? We might not ever know, at least until Donaldson is retired.

It’s called baseball not all trades play out.

Time and time again, it seems like Beane will zag just to piss people off.

I like the way you think, ilikebaseball 😉

No way the Jays offer Saunders a QO. If they do he will accept faster than Wieters did last year. As far as EE give him a reasonable offer and let us see who matches. Maybe the Yankees or Angels but who else in the AL. Bautista does not want to play DH so
if someone wants to pay 20 million to a 36 year old OF good luck. . Even if Jays lose
both EE and Joey there are plenty of cheaper solid power DH types available . Ryan Howard, Kendrys Morales, Alvarez of the Orioles.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from, but 100-plus RBIs and 40 HRs a year on average allows you to have the not-so-stellar pitching line (SP and RP) that the Jays tend to gravitate towards each year. I’d hate to see Edwing land in Boston next year. He’s basically the next Big Pappy.

I really feel like Edwin has taken over as the veteran leader of the Jays’ offense from Bautista. At the start of the year I was worried they couldn’t afford both. Now I think they probably ought to drop Bautista since he can’t play the OF well and just pay what they have to to keep Edwin.
He’s only 33, has developed a good eye, and seems to be well-liked. He can slot in as the everyday DH and play 1B from time to time. I’d be happy to pay him 5 years / $110MM if necessary. It’s an overpay, but he’s the core of that stacked lineup. Even if he fades, that’s not franchise-crippling money by itself. Plus, they’re already committed to Tulo and Martin for a few years, so might as well keep the “all-in” mentality for a few more years.
Saunders is a tough call. I’d be tempted to throw him a QO if he finishes decently this year, but I’m not giving him any kind of long term deal.

If I’m the Jays, I’d let Saunders and Bautista walk while offering them a QO. Bautista would probably decline it and though the odds are murky on Saunders, if he accepts, it’s an overpay for a single season and his overall batting line has been valuable.
If both walk, I’d run Upton in LF, Pillar in CF and I’d throw a 4-5 year deal towards Dexter Fowler to play RF. He lacks Bautista’s power but has similar plate discipline and is a huge upgrade defensively. I’d go after Fowler even if Saunders accepts the QO, I’d just shift Upton to a 4th OF/pinch runner/defensive replacement role.
I’d also give EE a 4-5 year extension. He’s streaky at times but his overall presence is a huge boost to the Jays lineup.

Trout traded with Pujols would be interesting

For the love of all things holy, stop with the lame “trade Trout” nonsense. The Angels have zero motivation to trade the best player in baseball, mostly because an equitable return is next to impossible.
More importantly, and ignored by those who trot out this tired trope, is that Trout is signed through 2020 with *a full no-trade clause*. Even if the Braves decided to offer their top 20 prospects, if Trout doesn’t want to relocate to ATL then the conversation is over. By all accounts he is happy to spend his summers in Southern California, where he is known as a good teammate, with close friends and mentors. He holds all the leverage in this situation, in addition to the Angels’ front office fully aware that it would be impossible to get a fair return on Trout’s projected production over the next 4 seasons.
Just remember Detroit gave up its 1st round picks (from successive years) among a half-dozen bodies to get Miguel Cabrera, none of whom moved the needle on the Marlins, while Detroit rolled on to the postseason and Cabrera picked up an MVP and triple crown. No GM wants to be the guy who is skunked in trading a sure future member of HOF.
The Angels don’t need to trade Trout, and there is no evidence he wants to be moved. It’s not going to happen. Move on to another obsession, please.

Well, I agree with you, but it keeps getting asked. That’s why I dropped a note about it here emphasizing how monumental (and thus unlikely) an arrangement it would take for that to occur.

Who cares. I’m happy we got JD and hopefully he stays as a Jay for the rest of his career !

Trout is a great player, don’t get me wrong. But to say he’s going to be the greatest player ever is a little premature. His first 5 years have been great, let’s see what the next 5 bring before anointing him the greatest ever please…..
Jeff Todd
Don’t add to what I wrote, please. I didn’t say that “he’s going to be the greatest player ever.” I’m not predicting anything, just stating what he has already done and where that places him.
Trout is already more than halfway to a clear HOF career in just five full seasons. He is tracing a rare, inner-circle HOF trajectory. There’s still plenty for him to accomplish to reach that status, but there aren’t many players who have come this far down the line at 25 years of age.

Yeah

Why do people get so worked up about the possibility of trading Trout? Yes, he is an amazing player, has been one of my favorites since before he was drafted, but he can fetch a huge haul and if someone gave you what it took to get him, you’d have their whole farm system. As an Angels fan, I’d do the trade again IF you get a huge haul of near ready and ready talent w big upside. I’d also see what if anything we could get for Pujols but that contract is hard to swallow. I’d like look for a mix of pitching and position players.

I think the Jays need to keep EE and give Saunders a QO along with Bautista. – They can get a RF like Trumbo, Fowler, Desmond and even take a chance on a 1 year deal for Carlos Gomez.
I think its time to play Pompey full-time to see if he’s the real deal or not.
I don’t see the need for the Red Sox to go after a DH. They have Sandoval coming back next year and can play Shaw at DH – Or Moncada plays 3B and Sandoval becomes the DH.
