At least they didn’t actually get penalized for Preller being shady
DeadliestCatch
There wasnt really any fear of punishment aside from if he outright hid medical records and burned them. Wasnt illegal to do so. Preller got a slap on the wrist for exposing a loophole.
But for them to look at every deal preller made this year and last and only a slap on the wrist means they found nothing deliberately against the rules. As such best-they could do was suspend the gm and fine the franchise for exposing a loophole.

the fact that any real meaningful penalties such as loss of draft picks/IFA-draft spending restrictions would have meant having to include the Players Union into the equation, which is never something MLB wants to do just because it’s one more uncertainty to deal with also might have had something to do with the seemingly light penalties
deadmanonleave
He got off very lightly for whatever reason, but I think he’s put himself in a tough position for any future trade negotiations as there’ll be zero trust from other GM’s.

On what planet is anything Ryan Schimpf did this year considered “playing solid defense?”

I’m actually excited for the Padres they are actually doing things the right way, they just need starting pitching and to cut some dead weight and they might be in a better spot next year

You didn’t list the player at the top of my list – Yangervis Solarte. He had a terrific season made all the more remarkable because he had to be away from his wife who was battling cancer. Tragically she died last week.
bbatardo
Yeah definitely Solarte is a bright spot. It’s crazy because I had no clue his wife had cancer throughout the year, yet he brought energy and emotion to the team along with solid playing.

Wil Myers could be added to the list. He proved he is healthy and made it a full year. finally. He also made a pretty seamless transition to 1B and is 3 HR and 4 SB away from being a 30-30 guy. He did slump some in the 2nd half, but it is the first time he has played this many games in a MLB year.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
No. He couldn’t. He was traded for two future All Stars and can barely keep his OPS above .800. It’s not a slump anymore when your season OPS drops below .800.

I know it’s easy to be infatuated with Trea Turner right now, but think you ought to pump the brakes at least a bit. Right now, he projects for a WAR very comparable to what Myers’ projections were right around July 1 (in fewer plate appearances than Myers had at that point). It’s also an interesting experiment to go back and see what Myers’ production looked like through his first 280 big league PAs in 2013.
Don’t know if you’ve watched any of this week’s games (certainly understandable if you aren’t given how unwatchable both the Padres and DBacks are!), but starting on Sunday, Myers was back to being a bit more upright in the box and having a little less bat wrap than I saw on the last homestand. Don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s been hitting the snot out of the ball again – to all fields – the last few days. The swing he took to demolish Greinke’s change last night was a thing of beauty.
I’d still gladly take the over on a 5.5 WAR season from him next year.
chesteraarthur
Even if you take trea turner at an equal projection to Myers he’s under control for longer and making less money.

And can play shortstop
disgruntledreader 2
Has played shortstop.

And will continue to do so in the future
Injediwetrust
Totally agree on Solarte. When Hinch sent Headley packing, the early consensus was the Padres return amounted to a bag of balls.. It will be interesting to see if both Shimpf and Solarte are in the 2017 plans;
bleacherbum
Solarte should be in the plans for sure, he offers a lot more than Schimpf does. Switch hitter that will hit around .300 and will give you a professional at bat each
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I like Schimpf and Solarte but I’d recommend you pay more attention to OPS than batting average.
davidcoonce74
Schimpf has been a really fun story – more homers than singles, a true TTO guy, but the list of 28-year-old position player rookies who have had major league careers of any length or note is pretty short.
youknowit
Schimpf is clutch. He’s a guy you want batting in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs.
bleacherbum
Brad Hand has carved out a nice spot for himself in the bullpen as well. Nobody saw that coming when we claimed him off waivers from Miami.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
This was a good post, as it definitely brought up a lot of good points. It’ll be interesting to see where the Padres go from starting next season now that they are undergoing some positive change.
Also, I personally think that they should sell high on Schimpf. He’s been great to watch and all, but I still think they’d be better off asking around this offseason for what teams might offer for him.
