Out of curiosity what are the odds the Phillies deal Odubel Herrera? I’ve seen his name mentioned here and there as a frustrating player to watch and that he may lack mental discipline, hence some of the errors on routine plays.
Jeff Todd
They need OFers, he’s their best current player, there’s plenty of control remaining, and they are perfectly positioned to take risks on players who may have some warts. I think he’s a “hold” unless someone goes crazy with an offer, so I don’t really see him as a likely trade candidate.

Why not drop Harrison to open a spot on the 40? I understand they need to pay him, but if he’s not going to play why keep a spot that can be given to a youngster or FA?
eilexx
I believe the way the CBA works is that Harrison has to be kept on the 40 man roster for insurance purposes…if they remove him they don’t get that money because it’s essentially releasing him…but they simply place him on the 60-day DL which opens the spot anyway.

FYI, Cesar Hernandez had 39 RBIs, and 17 SB with 13 caught stealing, not 37 SB with 17 CS.
Jeff Todd
That was a B-Ref comprehension error on my part.

Good piece. However, I think the Phils’ front office is way more bullish on Roman Quinn than you think. The only thing hampering his development is he just can’t seem to stay healthy. He showed in just a few weeks of time he is capable of being a solid big leaguer. He’d be expected to play CF and is a good fielder so his lack of power isn’t a big deal, and he has good OBP skills.
Jeff Todd
Could be. I’m not denying the potential at all, just pointing out what he showed last year. Maybe they want him to take a job out of camp.
DannyQ3913
Good OBP with consistently bad legs.
weenie2
Good piece, and sensible replies by all, which isn’t usually the case. The one thing you failed to discuss is the 40 man roster, and any concerns about exposing anyone to the rule 5 draft they don’t want to lose. Might it not compel Klentak to offer a prospect or two, from positions where we have a glut, in a deal for a veteran outfielder with one or two years left on his contract.?
weenie2
Eric Thames is certainly an intriguing story. Here’s a guy who’s only turning 30 this November, who averaged OVER .340, 41 HRs, 122 RBIs, and OPS of 1.200 in his 3 seasons in Korea. He’d be more fun to have than a Josh Riddick, just for the possibility of this guy being a true slugger after maybe having figured it out in his late twenties over there. Joey Bats the second, perhaps?

The next 2 FA classes are horrible. Bide your time Phillies.
Donnie B
Next two? 2018’s FA class will be historic.

I would love to see them take a run at Carlos Gonzales. I know he would be a one year rental, but the Rockies need to move him before he walks and he could be that pro hitter that helps all the young guys get better.
Donnie B
Why would they give up prospects to get a 1 year rental?
Makes ZERO sense in “Rebuild”
Carlos Gomez on a 1 year contract is a better bet as our kids get more experience in AAA.
I have no problem going after him in 2018 if we still need a corner OF.
Donnie B
Here’s my early predictions on who the Phillies go after.
2017 Phillies:
1B) T. Joseph
2B) C. Hernandez
SS) F. Galvis
3B) M. Franco
C) C. Rupp
LF) R. Quinn
CF) O. Herrera
RF) C. Gomez
OF) A. Altherr
OF) C. Coghlan
INF) L. Valbuena
INF) A. Blanco
C) A. J. Ellis
SP) C. Buchholz
SP) V. Velasquez
SP) A. Nola
SP) J. Eickhoff
SP) J. Thompson
SP) A. Asher / B. Lively / Z. Eflin
RP) G. Holland
RP) H. Neris
RP) T. Wood
RP) E. Ramos
RP) J. Tawaza
RP) J. Rodriguez
RP) C. Torres
oldoak33
You have the guy with the most innings and best ERA in 2016 as the number four. You also have Eflin behind Jake Thompson. That can’t be right.
Donnie B
The order wasn’t listed, just whom will most likely be in the mix somewhere.
Eflin is also coming off surgery on BOTH Knees – HUGE question mark there.
Jeff Todd
Don’t think they’ll add that many players on MLB deals — basically all who you list will require one — but there are some likely targets in there.
gwaid44
I like your bullpen additions of Holland and Wood a lot. I don’t think they will go after a SP like Buchholz and I think Gomez will get a long term deal somewhere, not something Klentak is looking to do. I think we will add a LH hitting 1B, (maybe take a shot on Pablo Sandoval if the Sox will give him away cheaply and eat some $$.) I think Roman Quinn will play RF to start the season, but will eventually move to CF moving Herrera to LF once either Kendrick or Cesar are dealt.I also wouldn’t be surprised if they traded Herrera if they got a very good offer. Opening Day lineup:
RF Quinn
2B Hernandez
CF Herrera
3B Franco
LF Kendrick
1B Sandoval/ Joseph
C Rupp
SS Galvis
P Hellickson
Rotation, Hellickson, Velasquez, Nola, Eickhoff, Thompson
Bullpen
Greg Holland or Neftali Feliz, Hector Neris, Jeanmar Gomez, Edubray Ramos, Travis Wood, JP Howell, Alec Asher

Zero sense is probably a bit low if it’s mostly eating salary and medium prospects for a guy that plays his but off in a FA year, isn’t blocking anyone and is a great influence on his fellow Venezuelan’s.
aff10
I just don’t see that one as all that feasible. It’s going to take more than just eating salary to get Gonzalez, and, even if they managed to get him for “medium prospects” (which I’d doubt), those prospects are more valuable to the Phillies that the abstract influence that Gonzalez may or not may have on the younger Latin players. I could see him as a legit free agent target after 2017 though, if Quinn or Williams flop next year

Great review, thanks!
