What is Nate Jones value? I’m highly intrigued by him for the Mets. If the White Sox move Abreu, I would think 1B prospect Dom Smith would interest the Sox. Maybe Smith
altuve2017mvp
If abreu goes anywhere i cant see them being competative for many many years. Dont expect it
thunder12k
They’ve acquired near major league ready talent in both deals so far. I would expect them to continue looking for players who are close to contributing like Smith.
Matt Galvin
But Mets need him so do Nats Ross.
floridapinstripes
You can’t trade smith because you won’t have Duda. Smith wouldn’t be enough. You need to come close to the miller trade. Which was a #25 or so, and #75 or so and two good minor league bullpen arms.
Smith is mid 40 so basically you need 2 smith’s. You would have to gut your system if you didn’t trade Rosario and smith.
thunder12k
Why can’t you trade him? The free agent market is flush with 1B’s or you could move and OF for a 1B prospect. Neil Walker or Wright could slide to 1B as well. Lots of options
hojostache
I’m not sure “close to the Miller trade” would be reasonable. Miller had a longer track record. I think Jones would be a great pickup…though not at that cost. Honestly, I’d rather the Mets try and find an internal solution as opposed to paying through the nose for RP, which is notoriously inconsistent.

i would think the sox ask for an eaton-like return for abreu, which is why abreu won’t be moved. if the mets part with rosario, smith, and a lower rated pitching prospect, then abreu’s probably theirs.

Did feliz start getting hurt after the rangers moved him into the rotation? I forget he existed.
PixelMelonz
Yep that’s what did him in imo

Which pitching prospect would the Pirates have to add to Tony Watson to get Joe Ross from the Nationals?
Someone below Nick Kingham on the depth chart? Kingham? Someone above him?
floridapinstripes
Why would they trade Ross when they just traded Giolito and Lopez. Lopez is better then Watson. He could of just closed. They are not trading a starter for a closer. They will trade prospects for a closer.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Probably the only way they’d do it is if they miss out on other closers, have enough rotation depth to part with Ross and wanted to get a young pitcher whose MLB clock hasn’t started yet.
The Eaton deal showed they are starting to plan beyond the Harper window.

Very comprehensive analysis, Jason. Great read!
I wonder if Houston would be open to moving one of Giles, Harris or Gregerson as a late-inning option. Giles would be an interesting buy-low candidate for a change-of-scenery bounce-back.
Whyamihere
Giles was excellent outside of April last year, I don’t think the Astros view him as damaged goods, Plus, how many contenders deal away their young closer? Don’t see it happening. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Gregerson with one year left moved, or Harris coming off of a career year, but they would have to get a lot of value back for those guys.
floridapinstripes
I’m not saying it will happen now but for the playoff contenders that don’t get a premium arm they should look into Betances for the Yankees. it might sound crazy but trading miller and chapman was just as crazy.
You won’t have a better option after Jansen is signed besides Britton if he is made available.

Sale the A’s to the Warriors ownership, business minded, eager to win, prosper group. Billy Beane will surely be retained – he is a minority owner with a creative mind but with hands tight due to this selfish, current ownership, new venue or not… Joke!

I’m interested to see who will roll the dice on Holland. I can’t imagine it will take big money or multiple years, could end up a nice low risk surprise for someone. I was originally hoping the Cubs would snatch him up but that’s hard to see after the moves fit Davis and Uehara.
SandyAlomar
I wonder if the Marlins get Jansen, if someone would try to get one of the two Indians closers? What would it take?

I think Robertson’s dip in performance I more due to the WSox manager’s ineptitude than his pitching. Robin used him wrong and he had times where he did not pitch for 9 days, and then got thrown into a save situation.
glassml
No way the Rangers trade “The Beard” Dyson. Jeffress goes if he has the value.
jakeperrow
Wonder if Seattle would consider dealing Edwin Diaz considering the crazy returns closers are getting. Thoughts?

I suspect the Mariners would be more likely to trade former closer Steve Cishek, who has one year and $6 million remaining on his contract. Cishek, who has 120 career saves, may miss the start of the 2017 season after undergoing labrum surgery on his hip.
I have suggested a trade of Cishek for lefthander Scott Kazmir should the Dodgers fail to re-sign closer Kenley Jansen. The Dodgers would probably need to kick in some money to cover the two years and about $33 million remaining on Kazmir’s contract.
FanGraphs Depth Charts project 2017 WAR of 0.9 in 65 innings for Cishek and 0.9 in 55 innings for Kazmir, who would be expected to accumulate more innings as a starter.
The medicals would be critical in light of Cishek’s surgery and Kazmir’s thoracic spine inflammation:

The Jansen sweepstakes are getting kind of strange. It looked like the interested teams were all in by the middle of the week. Since then, nothing.

st louis should trade rosenthal and wacha to los angeles for puig. move piscotty to first. throw in peralta for good measure. then sign turner.
kshaw91
Why do most fans want to dump off Wacha like he is useless? Two years ago he was considered an ace, you don’t sell low based on potential. However, Rosenthal is expendable as a proven closer with recent control issues. Control can be fixed and so his value as a former top closer might work for a team really needing it.
