I love it that MLBTR does these specials. They’re cool.

Great article! I would have loved a small blurb at the beginning about who Dan is and kind of an intro to the article, just because I went into reading it like most other MLBTR articles assuming it was going to be a summary from other sources, but the content is great! Well done, Dan.

Josh Hamilton best Rule 5 pick to date??? What do you think? If not him who in your opinion is the best pick to come out of the Rule 5?
renegadescoach
Roberto Clemente.
Johan Santana.
George Bell.
Jose Bautista.
Willie Hernandez.
Bobby Bonilla.

You could also include Shane Victorino and Joakim Soria, And of course Josh Hamilton.

Wow!! Great ones!! Clemente was a Rule 5 pick, man, that’s amazing!! I didn’t know it went back that far, great stuff!

Go ahead and throw Hector Rondon on that list. Not saying he’s the best, but he’s pretty damn good.

Hamilton was a great pick, though I’d insert him between George Bell and Jose Bautista on renegadescoach’s list since Clemente, Santana, and Bell contributed many of their best years to the teams that made them Rule 5 selections.
Just my opinion and choice of criteria. Curious to hear others’ thoughts.

I wonder if there has ever been a Rule 5 pick that made the majors after never playing above Rookie ball Appalachian League like the Cordoba kid the Padres picked up.
The Padres have had an infielder stick before. Everth Cabrera back in 2009. He had never played above high A,
alexgordonbeckham
Adrian Nieto, a catcher taken by the Sox in December 2013.
YourDaddy
Thanks. Didn’t Nieto have time in High A in 2013? Cordoba has never played above the Appy league.

Wei-Chung Wang, selected by the brewers back in the 2013 rule 5, was the first rule 5 pick from rookie league.
He struggled as the last man in their bullpen, but made it through the year. Projected as a starter, currently in brewers AAA affiliate

This is amazing.

This is why I love the Rule 5 Draft. J.J. Cooper with BA is a good follow on Twitter for Rule 5 info.

Very cool feature on a topic you don’t hear about every day. Looking forward to reading more like this. Twins Win forever.

Hector Rondon made up for the terrible waste of time Cubs bullpen Rule 5 picks. (David Patton, Lendy Castillo)
