Stories like this are really nice to read. Thanks for sharing!

This was the best player article yet. You made it feel like I was in the clubhouse or entering out from the bullpen steps. Great read, keep em coming
asuchrisc
Awesome.
BostonFern
Great piece! Thank you for sharing

Really cool piece. I wonder what some of the more unorthodox things you aren’t supposed to do in a big league club house are, something people wouldn’t normally think of
pex5
loved it!
everlastingdave
Great attention to detail in this piece. Looking forward to seeing more.

Entertaining

Really cool story and incredibly well written. Part of me feels like I was there – fantastic description.

This reminds me of reading Ball Four. Love this type of writing. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Incredible detail, solid in every way. Thanks Ryan

Another great read. So hopefully we will hear what happens when you are not playing baseball while on the road next. Good stuff.

Amazing details

Oh wow. Awesome story.

Felt like I was there, even got a bit nervous. Great read.

Wow…to say that I’m surprised by the reaction to this piece is an understatement to say the very least. I just kept waiting for something of consequence to be noted, and it never was. He did a great job of building it up more and more as it went along, but I feel like it everything after that was largely anticlimactic. I’m not trying to be a contrarian, but I felt as though this article was lacking overall substance. Perhaps I need to look at it in a different way, and realize that he is a ball player rather than a writer, so expectations should’ve been curbed from the beginning…or maybe I’m just a jackass (apparently EVERYONE else who read it would agree with the latter assessment of myself).
largeunit
Saying “but I feel like it everything” as I sat on my high horse critiquing someone else’s writing probably wasn’t the best strategy in the world. hahaha

You’re way off base duder, This dude told an awesome story. Rarely, does one of these pieces hold my attention (outside of Spilly’s), but this one did and did so very well.
largeunit
Fair enough…agree to disagree.
LADreamin
Something of consequence? He’s just talking about his first MLB appearance. That’s the whole topic of the story. So, the narrative is he went out in a forgettable game and pitched one inning of relief where the outcome didn’t really matter at all, but it mattered to him because he had made the big time. It is a great piece. While any random person (like yourself) would consider this pedestrian, he explains that there’s only a finite number of people who’ve had an MLB debut and he’s proud of his. This piece is great, he’s great and you’re not for trying to besmirch his effort. That’s the long and the short of it, pal.
largeunit
Listen PAL, there’s really no need to come at me with insults just because I happen to hold a different opinion than you regarding an article a ball player wrote. I clearly didn’t display any malice whatsoever in explaining my assessment of the piece, as evidenced by my usage of self-deprecating humor within my comment, so I’m unsure as to why you would go down the route that you did. I’m obviously in the minority on this one, and that’s just fine…I can live with that. That’s the beauty of these kind of forums, and our country in general…we’re all allowed to feel a certain way about any topic and we’re able to voice our likes and dislikes accordingly.
For you to bring it to the level of resorting to a personal attack against me for what you viewed as my “besmirching of his effort” is both wrong and quite frankly a prick move on your part. Either way, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Take care, kind sir!

large unit:
Could he have provided more details? Sure. Did he need to build every event into a climactic outcome? No. This is not a novel or screenplay.
Ryan Dennick shows us here a lot more than most interviews and second-party pieces. Instead of fussing over what’s not there, I prefer to enjoy what is there.
Maybe he can fill in some details with a later piece about his trail to the bigs, a trail any of us would have loved to walk ourselves.
As an aside, it’s noteworthy how many of us praise the story details of someone who isn’t a star, yet are quick to knock the same kind of player as a failure, and use crude labels for him, when his name shows up as a struggling prospect, a DFA candidate, or a marginal roster addition.

I really enjoyed this. Hope to see more of the same.

Couldn’t have been a better venue for a major league debut, I’m glad you looked up. Awesome piece

Really enjoyed! Felt like I was there. Had me on the edge of my seat! Keep up the good work

GREAT ARTICLE … I felt the nerves and excitement !!!
Ryan1976
I couldn’t agree more. Well done.
What a great article!
neoncactus
I enjoyed hearing about the feeling of being called up and the procedure of things (going to see the manager, having veterans call you out in the clubhouse, the candy bag) rather than just the details of your first appearance.

Outstanding! Like many kids I dreamed of making it to the big leagues. Unfortunately my dreams were much greater than my talents. This article made me flash back to my childhood. Would have given anything to have the experience you did. Great job on the article. Makes me wish Spring Training was starting tomorrow.
soxsupporterjoe
Great article about your 1st day in the show!! Players DO lip read. I was at the 1989 NLCS game between the Cubs and Giants and the Cubs catcher went to mound to talk with Greg Maddux………Greg said “high fastball” to the catcher and Will Clark picked it up. Of course he crushed the next pitch, a high fastball. After the game he told the press he read Greg’s lips. Up go the gloves to cover the face.

What a story!! So well written, and I could feel the excitement and anxiety. Keep them coming, Ryan, and way to kick butt in your MLB debut!
Deke
I could read stories like this all day. Just wonderful, thank you!!!
bobbyvwannabe
Heartwarming. Well-written.
I wish I had practiced harder in high school lol
MLB debut… 1=2=3… perfect…. what a feeling that must of been.
Thank you for sharing.

As a fan of this game, I think that the beauty of these pieces is the little things that these guys share that you are not going to learn from the writers or announcers, like how he was told not to look up when he came through the bullpen door. Anyone reading these comments must be an avid baseball fan, and not too often do we learn anything new. Until the day that I die, i will fantasize about stepping up to the plate with 2 outs in the 9th in the last game of the World Series, or stepping onto the field for the first time in the big leagues. These pieces just give me a few more details that i can draw from to make my daydreams just a little bit sweeter. Thank you guys for sharing your experiences with all of us that will only ever get to do it in our minds.
