Gabriel Ynoa was also traded to O’s for cash
Connor Byrne
Thanks. Added.

The question is, why? Ynoa wasn’t a top-tier Mets pitching prospect, but trade him for cash? I can’t imagine we couldn’t have gotten a mid to low-tier position prospect from someone, essentially taken a flier on someone, for Ynoa. Can’t imagine they got much money for him (cash deals usually aren’t for millions), so wouldn’t the Mets be better off with a player?

Personally, I believe the mets missed their window when they lost the World Series. They messed up.
Never again in the next few years will they have a chance
metseventually 2
Why do you say that? 2015 they were supposed to contend for WC spot and blew past expectations. 2016,2017 is when they were supposed to start competing.
pjmcnu
This is the silliest bit of Mets fan trolling I’ve seen in awhile. The Mets unexpectedly win the NL East & reach the WS, and by failing to win it they’ve “missed their window”? Either the author is an extremely poor analyst, or is just posting it to provoke outraged responses. Waste of time.

The Mets will have about 120 million to spend next year if Wright retires and that means they could sign Hosmer 16 million, Lucroy 18 million, Cain 16 million Altuve 19 million, Frazier 16 million, and put Conforto in Rf and Rosario at SS. This would give them a championship team with 50 to spare with the pitching they have now. They could save that 50 million to replace Harvey and deGrom when their contracts are up.
chesteraarthur
Where do you get 120 mil? And the astros would probably have something to say about the mets signing a player they control
frankthetank1985
You get something like 20 mil back next year for David if he retires. Not even because I’m sure it will be insurance for medical retirement so only like what 65% of that. The rest of the money will be from Bruce grandy Duda maybe walker. Then u put that money to Noah and degrom and bring up a hopefully solid rookie class in smith, Rivera/Gavin, Rosario, Flores, conforto, lagares/free agent cf, ces. Not bad with a lot of money saved and money avail to secure some pitching. Harvey hopefully comes back to his old self and can be traded for prospects or the center field option.

That makes no sense.

Gave them a B.
They did great getting Blevins and Salas for only 9M (a bargain compared to what relievers got early in offseason) and getting Cespedes to sign for only 4 years. You can question whether Walker was worth the QO, but I have little issue with it.
The main failure of the offseason was Bruce/Granderson dilemma. In my opinion, the Mets should have signed a LH bat to platoon CF with Lagares (or use Nimmo) and then dump Granderson and Bruce. Both of the veterans have only one year left of their deals, so it wouldn’t have been a huge bullet to bite. Its clear that Michael Conforto deserves playing time over those two.
The main issue for this team going forward is a bunch of impact players are about to be free agents. Lucas Duda, Jose Reyes, Neil Walker and Addison Reed are all free agents after this year. After 2018, Familia, Matt Harvey and Asdrubal Cabrera (assuming option is picked up) are free agents.
Granted prospects like Gavin Cecchini, Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith don’t make this an enormous problem, but the Mets could be in trouble if one or two of those guys ends up being a bust. They my need to make some modest investments in free agency to cover themselves in the effect one or two of the aforementioned prospects fails.

This post is confusing as it lists their big impending free agents but doesn’t include Granderson amongst them; instead it talks about how he should have been dumped. He had the second highest rWAR last year amongst their players who will be free agents next year.
The possible exodus next year is indeed a big issue, but I’d rather look at is as a positive. Replace the some of the high-priced Granderson, Bruce, Duda, and Walker with minimum-making Conforto, Nimmo, Rosario, and Smith, maybe Reed with Wheeler, then have plenty of money available to bring in an impact player or two (Lucroy, etc.)

I think the Mets front office is playing it right, they still will have the pitching for 3 more years. They could sign Hosmer and Cain off the team that beat them in the series, and play Conforto. Then they could sign Frazier as a free agent too. Add Rasario to that mix and you have a better team than you have now. They also can sign either Altuve or Lucroy. This would be a championship team with their pitching.
MatthewBaltimore23
How are they going to sign Hosmer, Cain, Frazier, and Altuve? That’s the top second baseman in the league, one of the best third baseman, and solid first base and outfield contributors. That’s going to cost alot.
chesteraarthur
Aside from adding like 70mil+ per year to their payroll and the questionable impact of a few of those players, Altuve also isn’t a free agent until after 2019.
kingjenrry
You’re right on Conforto and Rosario. Cain’s definitely an option. Hosmer isn’t actually a very good first baseman at all, so it wouldn’t make any sense to sign him. Lucroy is definitely an option, and the Mets did try to trade for him in 2016. As much as any Mets fan would love Altuve, he’s not leaving Houston, a team with tons of money to keep him in a Stro’s uniform for years to come.
chesteraarthur
Mets don’t really strike me as the team that would just eat 20ish mil on contracts
frankthetank1985
Mets aren’t and haven’t (besides cespedes) done any huge free agent moves and won’t next year. They have everything set up with smith Gavin Rivera Rosario conforto to all make huge contributions next year. If not some of them this year.
kingjenrry
They already have under this administration, having “eaten” the remaining contracts of Jason Bay, Oliver Pérez, and Luis Castillo.
chri
I did mention in the earlier paragraph that Granderson had only one year left, but I agree, my post would have been written better if I listed him in the pending free agents as well.
In regards to Granderson having the second highest rWAR among the soon-to-be free agents, he played the majority of his innings in RF, where he was an average defender. This year, he is gonna play mostly in CF, where he REALLY shouldn’t be. He is 36 and is simply not athletic enough to play CF. His value will take a huge hit in that case.
Connorsoxfan
They should’ve signed someone like Trevor Plouffe for infield depth. I don’t have much confidence in this team.
metseventually 2
They already have enough infield depth. Rivera, Kelly, Cecchini.
pjmcnu
The Plouffe’s of the world are always available later on….
kingjenrry
Trevor Plouffe isn’t as good as Wilmer Flores or José Reyes. No idea why the Mets would want to sign a worse player than guys they already have.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
They are mighty shaky in the infield if Duda joins David Wright on the DL. Reyes doesn’t give you much anymore except some potential pop (He certainly cannot run anymore) and if they were to lose him also then they’d be screwed big time and trading for Kelly Johnson again. This year will ride on their pitching. If thy are ALL healthy this might be enough..
metseventually 2
I don’t think that they’ll ride solely on their pitching necessarily. What’s matters is their depth and they have a lot everywhere. If they’re going to end up making a trade it’ll be for a CF (Pollock) and a reliever (Nate Jones). Also, They currently have Bruce trying out on first base, but of course take that with a grain of salt.
kingjenrry
Wilmer Flores has been rock solid defensively at first base and is a better hitter than James Loney. Bruce and Walker have also said they’d be willing to play first in a pinch. If Duda gets hurt, it would definitely hurt the Mets but not as much as it did last year. No, it’s completely untrue that they “ALL” need to be healthy; only Curtis Granderson was healthy last year and the team still won 87 games while making the playoffs. If they’re “ALL” healthy, the team’s winning 97+ games.
Tiger_diesel92
I love David wright but the man needs to retire. The injuries are going to force him into like prince fielder. These players who goes through these injuries frequently needs to know when to call it quits.
Bill
He’s not going to retire with years left on his contract. By going on the DL, the Mets presumably are able to collect insurance to cover most of his salary.
Bill
In what universe do Alejandro De Aza and Jonathan Niese count as notable losses, unless it was to celebrate their departure?
Jeff Todd
I guess maybe this is just your way of expressing your feelings on those two players, but generally, we use that space to list any players who played in the majors for and finished the year with that organization (along with any traded prospects, etc).
slimjones92
This article incredibly understates Gsellman & Lugo’s importance.
hojostache
I’m glad someone else noticed this too. Gsellman and Lugo make the mets SP 7 guys deep. Either of those last two could be the #5 on almost any club in the majors and they could be a #4 on some of the clubs..
I expect Gsellman to be 6th/first up as a starter and Lugo going to the pen. If Wheeler starts in the BP, Gsellman would be the likely #5. Lugo did pretty well in the WBC and last year he showed that he can pitch well under pressure in a playoff push. His curve is nasty and his FB is effective enough. He doesn’t need a 3rd avg to plus pitch, but it could happen if he continues to develop.
