Was upset myself Boston didn’t choose Carson Fulmer at the time. It’s been years since they chose a power pitcher with a 1st round pick (other than Kopech) and thought 2015 would come back to bite them again as another who got away.

“the Twins “had very little interest” in the outfielder who is now the game’s consensus number-one prospect.”
So….the Twins are run by dumb people..

That was Terry Ryan’s front office in a nutshell
GareBear
Another good point. They have overhauled the front office lately.
GareBear
Hindsight is 20/20. They may simply have been looking for an arm in the 1st round of the draft.

This. Unless the guy is projected to be the next Mike Trout, teams are generally going in looking for key needs.
jakem59
Teams that draft based on need in MLB are teams that struggle to stay relevant. This isn’t the NFL, these guys are years away from having any impact on their drafting club.
MrMet19
Smart teams could take that into account. The Indians, for example, could draft a first baseman this year and hope he’s ready once encarnacion leaves. Not saying that’s how a team will think or draft, but it’s certainly possible.

Also, to be fair, Mike Trout was never a consensus number 1 overall draft pick. The Angel’s drafted Randal Grichuk before him.
davidcoonce74
Trout was drafted 25th in that draft because players from the northeast just aren’t scouted as much because of their very short seasons.

You could say the same thing about the Rangers then.
petrie000
i wouldn’t say dumb, more likely ‘outdated’ when you consider how insular that front office had been up until Ryan’s firing.
the old maxim ‘you rebuild through pitching’ has sort of fallen by the wayside as ‘floor’ has come to be a lot more important than it used to be in the draft, and the floors of most pitchers are considerably low at that point in their careers.
rangerfan23
Twins have Thad now in the front office. Hate to see him leave the rangers front office but I feel like he will get the twins in the right direction

U always take best player available in the MLB draft. Always always. And Tyler Jay was a lights out reliever in college. So u overdrafted a big league reliever. Better then overdrafting Tim Beckham or countless others who became nothing of mention. Lot of worse picks then Tyler Jay if he can b the same type of reliever he was in college in the bigs
babyk79
Pitchers take longer to develop too so toy never know how pick will stack up against the others for years. And Jay was the Twins first pretty high pick and they made an organizational effort to focus on pitching
davidcoonce74
Try telling that to the Padres. Until recently they almost never took the BPA which is why so few of their first round draft picks ever panned out.

Smart move by Twins to add Breslow. Win win all around.
