Chris Owings is a capable corner outfielder, with Nick Ahmed slotting in at SS in place of Owings.

Honestly, the D-backs would probably be better off with Tomas on the DL. Sure he can hit. But his fielding is among the worst in the league. As a defensive player, he’s comparable to current Matt Kemp. Except he’s not as good as Kemp offensively, so he’s still worse. The only reason he starts, imo, is because he has a decent price tag attached.

I predict the extra roster spot goes to Vargas. This also means Owings will get more starts in the outfield, which is not a bad thing. Since Peralta has struggled against lefties, they might need another righty. Any predictions? I think there are some switch hitting infielders (Marte/Vargas) who are athletic enough to play outfield.

“the bat isn’t much in question after he slashed a robust .272/.313/.508 last year.”
Really?

Thats well above average lol

I mean, a poor spring isn’t going to cost him a shot at more or less everyday playing time. He can hit — so long as there’s enough power to make up for the OBP, or he catches up in the latter dept — it’s just not clear whether he can hit enough to make up for the poor D.

508 slugging is pretty darn good.

Maybe Pagan? I seem to remember him being a switch hitter (correct me if I’m wrong). He’s probably the best guy available on the market right now.

He seems to fit in quite well. I thought that before the injury and it’s even more apparent now. However, he might be looking for more money than the Dbacks are willing to spend on an older player.

Isn’t Hazelbaker on the 40-man?

Tomas on the DL might be the only hope of having the faint possibility of getting positive overall value out of that position. Dbacks must be hoping he opts out (snicker) after year 4. If the Snakes Baseball Dept. believes in miracles maybe an opposing AL GM will have a stroke and then take him off their hands to DH. Long term, Tomas would dominate the local beer league. I always see a rich man’s Dyan Viciedo when I watch Tomas hit + patrol the OF.
