After the way Close and Jeter were treated by the Yankees, I wouldn’t expect anything to come about during the season.
MB923
They treated him no differently than any team treats an upcoming FA. Jeter and Close wanted over $100 million originally and the Yankees passed on that and said test the market. No differently than the way Red Sox “treated” Ellsbury and Boras.

Many times there is no resolution until the end of the opt out and then the player and agent decide then, only it seems in these very large media bubble cases does it get hyped up like this.
Not sure what you meant by Ells-Close as never a case of an opt out there, only strained relations over several of Ells disappearing acts from the club with Boras’s private dr’s. for extended periods.

Huh? I’m just saying the Yankees let Jeter test the free agent market. They didn’t want to give him what he originally wanted (something close to or north of $100 mil).
I’m questioning goblins on what was wrong the way the Yankees treated Jeter.

This is no different?

Steve- to quote your article:
“The Orioles released minor league outfielder-turned-pitcher Dariel Alvarez yesterday after it was learned that he’d require surgery…..Orioles are hopeful of re-signing Alvarez to a minor league contract and keeping him in the organization to rehab.”
So my question is: Who pays for the surgery ? He was injured while with the O’s, so they pay? If he is released and not signed- who? –OR if he signed with someone else- who pays?

Insurance.

I just found an article on NBC sports from 2015 that talks about this. google.com/amp/mlb.nbcsports.com/2015/03/04/now-th…
On the other hand this is the Orioles and Angelos is so cheap he may try to get out of it anyways.

Thanks. I was wondering about that myself.

Let him opt out,his elbow is a ticking time bomb.i hope that he yankees are smart enough to let him walk if he does.he certainly did not look like cy young on opening day
MB923
Actually if they are smart, they will trade him at the deadline (if they’re out of it and if he’s fully healthy). And I’m sorry but you can’t use 1 start as a judgement. The top name on the market, Jose Quintana, also got lit up on Opening Day.
ThePriceWasRight
the guy has a partially torn UCL he isn’t fully healthy now.
trading him is an option but I’d be surprised if they get back a great package. teams won’t salvage the farm for a guy who is damaged goods and an FA. the Yankees certainly could get back a teams top 7 prospect but likely in the 5-7 range

By all means let Tanaka opt out and walk..his elbow is a ticking bomb. Plus more financial room for..wait for it..*2018* Otani will be ready for this fall so goodbye Tanaka!

I think the Yanks sign Ohtani to a major contract along with one of Tanaka, Darvish, and Arrieta.
thegreatcerealfamine
Yes and no on the others!

I just heard that Ohtani will sign in the U.S. next year
