If you are trying to break the team major league strikeout record, Nieuwenhuis is perfect. They just didn’t need a huge strikeout guy on their bench when they have too many to start with. His assignment is tacit admission they made a mistake in releasing Scooter Gennett who’d be a much better LH option off the bench. I suspect they’ll consider adding Kyle Wren to active roster when they decide to go back to a 12 man staff rather than Brinson, Phillips or Cordell, who’d they want to keep in the minors at least until Super 2 eligibility time elapses.

IDK about admitting a mistake by releasing Gennett . . . true, he’s more productive at the plate than Nieuwenhuis. but Gennett puts up solidly “ick” defensive numbers, is being paid $2.5 million this year, and can’t be trusted in CF at all.
If Nieuwenhuis’ demotion is an admission of anything, it’s probably that they’re OK with Hernan Perez in CF, and that Perez ought to be given more ABs. Have you seen what Perez has done the last couple of nights? Wow . . .
