Uh, there’s nothing special about that draft for the White Sox. Sure, it produced a lot of major leaguers, but only Burhrle is the good story. Even IF Rowand, Majewski, Fogg, or Wells were any good, they hardly even played for CHW. Rowand played a bit for them, but his best years were with the Phillies and he tailed off considerably once he signed with SF. Any team has stories about good drafts, but this story isn’t even one of those.

It’s not quite an article about it being a special overall draft. More of how they found a gem in the 38th round.

And kind of just the thinking of a GM/scout back then.

He spent five years in Chicago and two in Philadelphia.

Calm down there, Grinch. Your negativity is showing. Even if this story doesn’t best encapsulate a good draft boone, it was still a solid story with enough insight to merit the time spent reading. Cheer up, friend.

Obviously, you have never scouted or had the ability to evaluate. Projecting young athletes is very difficult and to have a handful in one draft make some kind of impact in the ML is special. Good article, even better that it’s not one about plugging #’s in some computer and getting credit for something that you had little if anything to do with it. Out!

Rowand was instrumental to the Sox winning the World Series, so yes, he was a signigicant draft pick for them.

Nice story Mr Wasserstrom. Its nice to read some meaningful history what goes on behind the scenes.

Outstanding piece Chuck. Really love hearing the perspective from a veteran of the war room. . One of the best pieces on the ‘net. And to the grinch, any draft that hits on five major leagues is a success, particularly two who are instrumental to a World championship (along with two others who made minor contributions along the way). Look forward to seeing more pieces like this gem!

Love these in depth, behind the scenes articles !!
Thanks Chuck !!

nice story but it goes to show it’s all just a giant crapshoot. so many first round misses and misjudgements on guys like Pujols and Buehrle after hours of scouting and analysis.

Great read. Buehrle and Halladay were my two favorite starters in the 00s. Great pitchers, but great people too. And who doesn’t like watching a game in two hours? Those guys could get it done.

I really wish they’d overhaul the draft process. Make all picks tradeable, replace the bonus pools with contracts that have pre scaled values and lengths like in the NBA, and once you draft a player you own his rights and can trade him. None of this drafting high schoolers in the 39th round and then they re-enter. Once you get drafted once, that’s it. That team has your rights.

Other than the latest transaction news, articles like this is why I visit MLBTR.
Another fantastic piece Chuck.
