Think its safe to say at this point the 2009 draft was the best in baseball history. And what’s crazy about it is that most of the high end talent came outisde the 1st round. Trout, strasburg and pollock were the only ones in the first round if i remeber correctly
tylerall5
I wouldn’t say that. Look up the ’05 draft and you might change your mind.
dodgerfan711
’05 is not even close.. The big names are better and the list is longer in ’09.

‘…third baseman Mark Teixeira (to the Yankees)…’ Third baseman?
Great read, even though these drafts involve a lot of luck.

Technically, Teixeria played thirdbase as a 23 year old for the Rangers in 2003.

Thanks Rbase. My typo has been fixed. Thanks for keeping me honest!

Definitely fun to read, I’d love to see more pieces like this!

Just pointing out in case you missed it — this is the fourth of the series from Chuck. You can find his other “Inside the Draft Room” pieces by clicking the link at the end of the post or just this one right here:

My apologies if you already saw.

Not at all, I wasn’t aware of the others, so I really appreciate the link. Looking forward to reading those, thank you!

This was a tremendous read. Definetly would like to see more like this. Great job Chuck!

I get ill whenever I think the White Sox could have drafted Trout instead of the wet fart known as Jared Mitchell because he played “football” which has no relation to baseball whatsoever. The Sox had a crap system for the longest time because Kenny Williams always drafted “athletes” who’s biggest asset was the complete inability to play the game of baseball. Luckily those days seem to be over as the Sox drafts from 2015 and 2016 were highly rated.

Great read, fascinating “sub rosa” scenes, excellent analysis. Keep ’em coming, Chuck.

Maybe because I’ve always been fascinated by the inner workings of front offices or maybe just because they’re well-written, but I absolutely love these pieces. The gamesmanship and gossip associated with the draft is crazy, you’d think that teams would be able to keep the lid closed on who they planned to take, but I guess not.
Side note, as mentioned above, that 2009 class was unbelievable. Strasburg, Pollock, Trout, Arenado, Kipnis, Lemahieu, Seager, Belt, Keuchel, Khris Davis, Goldschmidt, Dozier, Carpenter. That’s a lot of talent, fascinating for a draft with Dustin Ackley, Donovan Tate, Tony Sanchez, and Matt Hobgood 2-5 overall

One of the writers at FG said in a chat that the Pirates would have taken Trout with the #4 pick but Tony Sanchez cut an under slot deal, so they took him instead.
What a bargain, huh?

Chuck, these stories are incredible. I hope you’re working on a book at some point.
Thank you MLBTR staff and contributors for all the hard work and great content you put out.

One of the best things I’ve read on MLBTR. Really well done, good storytelling. Amazing that Eddie Bane wasn’t given a lifetime contract after that draft.

I would love just about any story about behind the scenes trade/draft stuff, but Chuck Wasserstrom is an amazing writer.
His pieces read like screenplays in story form.
Great stuff.
Finally got the answer why Grichuk went first, too.

As a Padres fan, I’m still holding out hope that Donavan Tate is going to make it.

Great read. Very informative. Amazing how poor the farm system became after Bane was let go because Tony Reagins couldn’t get along with him. Should still be with the Angels. He consistently produced.
callmemabry
Fascinating and well-written. Thank you.
