Bryan Price’s use of the bullpen has been nothing short of masterful thus far. You can see development in Reed and Stephenson from one appearance to the next. They weren’t that far off being one under .500 for the second half and they roll out some pretty athletes every day. They’ve got some flexibility with Lorenzen all but two relievers are converted starters. They probably aren’t division winners but I think they can compete for a Wild Card.

I do not think they can compete for a wild card because they lack top end starting pitching and quality through out their lineup. Let’s see who ends up closer to reality.
redsfan48
They very well COULD compete for a wild card, but it would take a whole lot to go right. More realistically, I see them as a .500 team, give or take 3-4 wins. But it certainly wouldn’t surprise me, and shouldn’t surprise anyone else, if they do manage to compete for a wild card.
redsfan48
Here’s just a few things the Reds would probably need to happen (not saying all of these need to happen, but definitely most): Mesoraco contributes something remotely close to his 2014, Disco and Homer get healthy and pitch well, Lorenzen and Iglesias continue to excel in multiple-inning fireman roles, the remainder of the bullpen ends up at least league-average, and the starting lineup stays healthy.

It takes a bunch of things to go right to compete, but if those things all magically happen it shouldn’t surprise anyone? Are you trying to be funny? The reds are projected to win 72 games. It would certainly surprise me and it should surprise anyone who is objective if they can win 85-88 that it takes to compete for a wild card.
In your observations of what it would take for the reds, you seem to forget the part where the nats/mets/giants/pirates/cards would all have to suck pretty bad too to open the door for the reds.
mvottop
Well I’m not going to disagree with you but I think the pirates suck and are taking numerous steps in the wrong direction. Not the Pirates from the recent years.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Nah, the Pirates are just a Jose Quintana away from toppling the Cubs…I hear.
BrandonGregory74
The improved bullpen probably adds 8 wins. I think they end up with a very young rotation and they keep the 4-man bench. They’ve got some decisions to make about Mesoraco and Cozart but you can see a group that thinks they’re good.
redsfan48
The reason it shouldn’t surprise anyone is because, unlike the past few years, the 2017 Reds have legitimate talent and upside.
I am not at all convinced that either of the Cardinals or Pirates are playoff contending teams either. Both of those teams are in a weird spot where they are trying to still contend, but have likely passed their window to contend, and should probably sell to improve their futures. I agree that it would likely take one of either the Mets or Giants to struggle for the Reds to get a wild card though. Once again, my point was that this year’s Reds have legitimate talent, and that’s why it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see them exceed expectations.
thor would look better in red
well if you give them 3 wins over .500 you are saying 85 wins and that is enough to compete for the 2nd wild card
timyanks
there were about 4 months in the off season and we are still seeing off season reviews?
usafcop
Reds will finish 4th in the division only ahead of the Brewers….but give the Reds a couple of years then they may contend for wild card though that is also a stretch….
mvottop
I think they’ll finish 3rd above Pittsburgh to be honest. I think people are underestimating the talent on the team. It really sucks Disco is out for an extended time, but with Garrett looking like the real deal, I’m curious to see which other pitchers can stand out and establish themselves as clear options for the rotation. As much as I like Bronson, I would rather a young guy get his spot. Regardless, I say within 2 years the team will be legit contenders for a wild card. Maybe sooner if the development goes well but don’t sleep on them they have a lot of young talent just now arriving and that will be arriving soon.
BrandonGregory74
Agreed. Romano and Senzel could be up this year. There are a lot of flexible pieces on the pitching staff and in the field.
cincysports24
no way senzel comes up this year. maybe mid year or later next year
redsfan48
Especially if Suárez continues to play well. No reason to rush Senzel
BrandonGregory74
If they trade Cozart there could be an opening unless they move Peraza and play Scooter every day. I agree I wouldn’t rush him either.

Am I the only one who thinks these “Offseason Reviews” should be done during the Offseason? Why are we 10 games into a season and still reading about this?
BaltimoreMatthew23
Because you can’t review something when you’re in the middle of it. Thats why they put it after the offseason.
realgone2
Yeah let’s just do the offseason review the day after the World series ends!
lesterdnightfly
No, you’re not the only one.
There is Slide ^ for company.
The rest of us think it’s just right.

I think the Reds will surprise a lot of people this year. The people shouting 90-100 losses will eat their words.
mvottop
Amen!
redsfan48
Even last year’s team didn’t lose 100, and this team is certainly better than last year’s.
