Despite the presence of Trout, the Halos will battle the A’s for 4th place in the AL West.
Their roster has one muskie and lots of bluegills.
alt2tab
I think they’re more likely to have to battle it out with the Rangers for third place than they are to beat out the A’s for the cellar

Pass the Dutchie to the left hand side. The Angels will be lucky to finish .500
angelsfan4life
Cron will be traded for minor leaguers

Hey, at least they got the most impactful player in the world. Pitching was not addressed so not much improvement in team play should be expected.

Except that Richards is back and healthy. Shoe is back and healthy and uses his splitter more often, which was why he bounced back the way he did in the second half last season. Skaggs is healthy. Even Nolasco has been using his sinker a lot more and that’s why he had a 3.21 ERA and only 15 walks after he was acquired by the Angels. They also brought in a bunch of swing men to throw multiple innings of relief and mop up duty is a starter has a bad outing. Most of what was addressed was in-house. If all goes well they can compete. I can see them winning 88 games but can see the wheels falling off again and then losing 88 games. All depends on health and how far their pitching takes them. And that goes for any other team. There’s not a pitching staff in the AL West that I would call a safe pick any way.

1) Richards is back and “healthy” but will almost assuredly be on an innings limit, or be handled very gently.
2) Shoemaker has had is injury issues and is more of a #3/#4
3) Skaggs is healthy but has never lived up to his potential and has been a backend rotation starter
4) Nolasco and “only” 15 walks? walks have never been an issue for Nolasco. With ANA he averaged 1.8 BB/9, he’s at 2.1BB/9 for his career.
5) Your analysis gets worse….Nolasco doesn’t throw a sinker. When he came to ANA he relied more on his fastball while reducing his use on all breaking pitches.

Angels should trade their best outfielder Kole Calhoun for prospects, and they should try to get rid of Trout’s bad contract. Start a rebuild.
lesterdnightfly
Wait — Mike Trout isn’t their best outfielder? Quick, tell Scioscia — he needs to redo the lineup !
bluegorilla
Any team in MLB would take on Trout’s “bad” contract in a heartbeat.

He’s being sarcastic, you silly gooses.

Overall I give them a B or B+
I don’t like their choice in free agents and money they signed for.
I can see Valbueuna’s deal working out maybe, and also maybe Ben Revere, if he can bounce back. However they way overpayed for Chavez. Almost 6M for a pitcher who had 1 good season in his whole career, and mostly was a 5th starter or swingman type.
Id also like to know how a Andrew Bailey was able to get anything other than a minor league deal with ST invite. He got a major league deal, somehow.
Nevertheless, I will explain why I gave them a B+, as opposed the the F that it looks like I’m leaning towards….
Because I really like their trades they did. First off, I moved their rating up from an F to a B- just from the Maybin trade. They gave up one non-prospect type for Maybin, who has had 2 good seasons in a row, is still young, and hit over .300 last season while adding upon his nice 2015. I have no idea how they plucked Maybin for basically free, but that’s just outstanding negotiating by the Angels front office. As far as their other trades, they certainly didn’t lose any, or at least I don’t think they will lose any of the trades.
They gave up just a teeny bit too much IMO for the Maldonado and Pounders trades, but not enough to drop their grade. Their minor league signings, especially Petit, brings their grade from that B- up to a B and maybe B+.

Billy Eppler did well given the current conditions. The Angels are not in rebuild mode but they are not in win-now mode. They are somewhere in the middle, simply trying to be competitive and then make assessments come trade deadline. To me that’s a B or C grade of playing it safe.

The Angels have the kind of team going in that will rely heavily to on health and having good years from a lot of guys at the same time. Although many playoff appearances revolve around that any way. I can see them winning a spot, but I can also see the wheels falling off and losing another 85 games or so. Do or die kind of team. Hit or miss. But that’s what I love about it. Trust me, for those who were too young, winning the AL West over and over with little or no competition started to get old because they couldn’t get back to the World Series. All franchises have their ups and downs. But this of course is a team that can go on a run or fall on their faces. That’s the beauty of it. We’ll see how it goes.
GO ANGELS!!!
Philliesfan4life
The angels need another bat in that line up, maybe next season they spend money and get Moustakus or Frazier to play third, and sign an ace for the rotation, or a solid number 2 like hellickson
ryanw-2
Do they really though? I mean their current lineup might have more running ability than any of those lineups they had when they were making playoffs year after year.
Philliesfan4life
they do have a lot of running ability , but they still need another bat. I don’t see them brining back Escobar to play third unless he has another great year.
arcadia Ldogg
Hey MLBTR. Too bad you can’t take constructive criticism.
lesterdnightfly
Look up “constructive”. Your deleted post was a personal attack and offered nothing positive.
cmancoley
what did he say
lesterdnightfly
Because he disagreed about one small thing that Charlie Wilmoth wrote about the Angels, arcadia said that Charlie needed to be let go; that Charlie didn’t know anything about baseball; and other “constructive” things about the site, staff, and coverage.
It was totally over the top, negative, belittling, and angry, and it was rightfully deleted.
greatdaysport
I believe it wasn’t a little thing. Wilmoth expecting the Angels to resign a horrible hitter like Joyce (avg 177 with the Angels), really isn’t very smart.
lesterdnightfly
Little thing or not, it was an uncalled for, inexcusable attack.
