$15 mil is only a little higher than market value for his floor (1.5 – 2 fWAR).
$8-9 mil a year is the going rate for fWAR, so I think this article is a bit overly negative. He still has some upside, too.
The opt outs agreeably are overkill, though.

Not to say it’s a bad article. I enjoyed reading it, I just disagree.

You’re right. Elvis is certainly getting the better end of the bargain. But it’s not like he is huge albatross of a contract.

Overpaid and overrated.

He was great last year and already looking impressive this year. How is he overrated?

Wasn’t it Andrus who committed, like, 3 errors in one inning to cost the Rangers a playoff series a few years back?
Whos123
What’s your point? He felt like he let his team down after that and had a career season afterwards.

No mention of his 80 grade smile?

Great article, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I love analyzing contracts given to big name free agents or extensions that buy out multiple years. I agree with all your points, spot on.
I wiish you’d mention one thing though.
I wish you’d mention the reason he was given this extension is because the Rangers were worried the Yankees were ready to open the bank to sign a significant SS to fill in for Jeter.’s shoes. Maybe their concern was misguided and they overpaid to prevent Andrus from reaching FA and multiple opt outs was too big of a concession to make because of their rarity in today’s contracts. But it doesn’t seem like an albatross of a contract.
Who are Andrus’s agents, I give them a lot of credit.
Wonder how long it would be before multiple opt outs become the norm? I give it until 2018, when Kershaw exercises his opt out and resigns. The Dodgers were trend setters of the opt (they made it popular) but 2 Opt outs never really caught on, even after the Rangers gave Andrus this contract.
