I can see the astros making a move for Cole or Quintana, same for the red sox
ghost of harambe
No chance for red sox, devers seems to be untouchable, and without him they don’t have the prospects to pull it off anymore
Philliesfan4life
do the red sox even have a farm system left after they gave the white sox a haul for sale.
ghost of harambe
Groome and devers (possibly travis), thats all
Philliesfan4life
they traded a lot of talent away already for Sale, plus Kimbrel as well. If the red sox get price back and porcello gets back to his form from last year, not sure they need a pitcher. I can honestly see the cubs making a move for Quintana, not sure they would trade for Cole
mcase7187
They could take from big leagues like JBJ , E-Rod one of the catchers the is always away
TheGreatTwigog
To DD, I don’t think anyone is untouchable
vinscully16
… Devers.
Ken M.
Isn’t he mashing AA pitching as a 20 year old?
downeysoft42
Saw him in 1 game and he went 0-4 with 3k’s but swong darn hard every time so I’m not sure what to think of him..
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
Cole to Houston makes way too much sense. They have the chips to get it done, and as the 2016 Cubs and Indians showed, when you have a chance to win the whole thing, you need to go for it, because you never know how bad you’ll be next year (see 2017 Cubs and Indians).
Cole to HOU probably nets Kyle Tucker, Derek Fisher, Gerrett Stubbs and Marwin Gonzales. A pretty nice haul for PIT.
johncena2016
Marwin isn’t being traded, it makes zero sense for both sides. He’s 28 year old utility man who wouldn’t really have value for a rebuilding Pirates team. The Astros would seriously lack Marwin’s above average bat and his ability to play everywhere expect Pitcher and Catcher.
Kylemcc
How bad you’ll be next year? I wouldn’t call the 2017 Cubs a bad team. Especially with them having more talent than the rest of the league..
Retired NFL Player
Houston would never do it. They would have to send their number 1 and 2 prospects, along with 2 other top prospects in the 6-10 range. Or the top two prospects and Springer.
Philliesfan4life
for Cole?
Retired NFL Player
Yes. He will be the most expensive pitcher to acquire on the trade market. Teams will be bidding against each other, if the Pirates make him available. They should. They should also trade their owner lol.
baberuthbomber8
Totally agreed that is a major overpayment for an SP who doesn’t seem to be living up to his potential.
I would think HOU works a deal with TB for Cobb and Odrozzi possibly. Not the sexiest names but more than capable 2/3 with them slotting in behind Dallas and Lance it seems solid, and cheaper.
Philliesfan4life
I can see Houston making that type of trade and possibly the cubs trading for Archer or Quintana
Philliesfan4life
the pirates would want Martes I believe
stl_cards16 2
Probably, but that’s not near as exciting as it was 3 months ago. I’m sure they’ll start out wanting Kyle Tucker. Possibly meet somewhere with Fischer and Martes
JKB 2
Oh so the Cubs and Indians are bad now???
Austin0723
Please don’t trade anyone DD, until the team gets its stuff together we’re not winning anything regardless of what we acquire
fisher40
It won’t matter which team Cole gets traded to, when he hits the free agent market, mark my words, he’ll be going home to either the Dodgers or Angels. Guaranteed
Philliesfan4life
Angels would be an awesome fit because they would be able to afford him at that time.
tylerall5
His favorite team growing up was the Yankees, so they’re a possibility as well.
slider32
If so he should have signed with them instead of going to UCLA, I think they drafted him out of high school.
thegreatcerealfamine
Gonna remind you when he’s pitching for the Bombers!
itsgonnahappen
Pirates dont really need OF prospects, however you dont pass on blue chip prospects when you can get them I suppose.
Astros might be able to trade an extra arm to keep Tucker though. Martes, Whitley, Armenteros, and Derek Fisher? Just spitballing here
leefieux
The Pirates have a mediocre Polanco, a PED guy in Marte and a declining Cutch. Yep. We don’t need OF’ers.
Our top prospect, Meadows, is hitting around .220 at Indy. Yep, we don’t need no stinking OF’ers. 😉
fisher40
The Angels and Dodgers make the most sense. Both are big market clubs and would surely want their hometown guy back home. 2018 off-season
circaflex
Out of those two the dodgers make the most sense. Why go to a bottom feeder team like the angels when he has the chance to win with the dodgers?
CompanyAssassin
I’d cover the whole thing to get rid of Peralta.
ghost of harambe
If you had marrero playing 3rd you’d be happy to have peralta
dlevin11
Frazier would be a good fit for Red Sox but no way does Devers go in that deal. Maybe Chavis or Dalbec and other prospects.
madmc44
I saw Devers this week 2 for 4 and IBB. Hit 2 hard singles against a good LHander.
As of today the Sox are only4.5 out. If anyone goes it’s JF. When Price comes back move Pomerantz to the pen or another team.
Chavis has 10 HR’s at High A Salem.. He and Devers are the closest thing to power sources in the minors.
I saw Maddox also this week—he was moved to AAA. in the last 5 days and has appeared in 3 games. Callahan, Maddox, Workman, Barnes, Bradley,Jr., Pomerantz, may go in a package for Frazier and/ or Quintana.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the CWS and BRS go for another big trade soon and very soon.
ASapsFables
Trade rumors are heating up as the summer deadline approaches. David Robertson might be the first White Sox domino to fall with impending FA’s Todd Frazier, Melky Cabrera and Derek Holland sure to follow. Jose Quintana would fetch the most and his value could really peak come July 31st with his excellent pitching of late.
I’d still love to see a deal involving “Q’ with the Cubs. It makes too much sense for both Chicago teams and would seem a more likely scenario than the Cubs making a trade with inter-division rival Pittsburgh involving Garrit Cole. Former Cub Chris Archer of the Rays would also make sense for the Cubbies.
therealryan
While Archer makes sense for every team, I do agree that he would be a great fit for the Cubs. He would cost a ton though. Would probably take Jimenez, 2 of Happ, Cease, Candelario or De La Cruz and another interesting prospect or two to get the Rays attention. That’s if the Rays would even trade him since they’re off to a better start than the Cubs so far.
Philliesfan4life
It might take Happ , Jimenez or Candelario plus a pitching prospect or 2. But right now Rays could be buyers if they are in contention for the wildcard or division.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I still think Cole will be a Yankee, since we already know they like him enough to spend a first round pick on him.
But, I like the idea of packaging Cole and Watson to fill two of Houston’s biggest needs to see if they could get both Martes and Tucker.
melmann218
It should take those two plus more to land Cole alone.
Whyamihere
If Cole can be a consistently 5 WAR player, sure. He’s only done that once though, and if he’s “only” a 4 win player or so, his value matches up roughly with Tucker 1 for 1.
Watson isn’t worth much.
madmc44
The Rays just moved ahead of the Sox into 3 rd place in the East.
They have some excellent young pitching and Dickerson swings a great bat.
Their pitching could have them in 1’st soon.
Philliesfan4life
If the rotation stays healthy and they get enough offense, that can happen but I still see the O’s winning the east, but they need Britton back Asap
cxcx
The post should note inaccuracies in Caffardo’s column. Like where he says Cole is only under control for one more year rather than two.
