This Thornburg trade has been an absolute bust. I dont recall him being injured prior to the trade, so the luck of this has been exponentially bad. We gave up a 3B, something we now NEED, for a guy who will likely be lucky to pitch at all this year.
lucienbel
Definitely a tough trade to stomach at the moment.
InPolesWeTrust
Crap luck I guess. Preller have family in the Brew Crew’s FO??

lol ghost
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Surprised the Sox haven’t gone crying to MLB yet like they did after the Pomeranz trade
start_wearing_purple
In that case the Padres were actually lying during their trades. This is just bad luck. If you’re going to bash the Red Sox then at least don’t make up history.

For sure.. Because Preller was suspended by MLB for 30 days because he LIED might be some proof, or withheld records from potential trade partners, then when a Padres fan like that above poster.. Why let facts get in the way?
The what ended up (so far) as mos discerning thing regarding the Thornberg deal is that he’s not even a needed commodity with a solid Boston bullpen and more decent relievers at Pawtucket with Carson Smith fairly close.
The Dombrowski fears have come true.. Gutting the system. Sale trade? Fine, but looking to make deals with all the pieces.. like Thornberg and last summer for Pomeranze shows he will continue to gut the system and I’ve not seen in the wee bit of time since he took over his ppl are much in the prospect arena, outside of Jay Groome who a blind man would have taken at number 12 it was so obvious. His 2016 draft otherwise looked as abysmal as that from 2012.. Nothing.
I Believe We Can Win
Red soxs hate being lied to but are ok lying to the mlb about their international signings. mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/latest-on-red-sox-inter…
Funny how that works. Its only ok if it benefits me attitude apparently.
padresfan
Hmm
Yet, Pom was solid and that suspect has been on the shelf… he has been horrible prior to be shelved

Swiftly and properly penalized also, not just a slap in the wrist like San Diego got over the witheld medical reports.. boston’s kids they gave hidden bonuses to, or ones that were spread around were ALL declared unrestricted FA and allowed to keep the cash. i don’t see any prospects going back to Boston for Pomeranz and his bum arm.
Have said it numerous times.. way to many ill informed people who post here.. i can go into more detail with regards to those Venezuelan kids declared FA, or why Boston didn’t rescind the deal with the padres after the trade deadline had passed last August if anymore of u juvy’s have anything else to say..
I Believe We Can Win
Boston was allowed to rescind the trade. The mlb gave them the opportunity. Funny, youd think if boston was truly wronged theyd immediately rescind and take espioza back. Clearly it wasnt that big of a deal. They chose not to. Pomeranz was not the savior or going to be what got them to the ws. Dont play the “well they were in the hunt” they had triple a guys to help out. If they felt pomeranz was damaged goods he wasnt going to be what they wanted. So no excuse there. I agree you seem misinforned and biased. nesn.com/2016/10/red-sox-declined-offer-to-rescind…
I Believe We Can Win
In 2016 heres who cleared revocable waivers. Red sox could have easily rescinded the trade for pomeranz and used either santana or kazmir to fill the void and given up less. Nobody was touching the contracts of those pitchers at the time. But boston could have for rotation help and kept espinoza. The more you know.
mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/mlb-players-cleared-wai… james shields, ervin santana, scott kazmir.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Careful with all of those factual explanations, some of these fans just can’t comprehend that level of logic.
ghost of harambe
Red sox accepted there punishment though, they don’t keep going on about it like padres fans
billysbballz
Accept if your John Silver who is notoriously a homer Red Sox fan.
I Believe We Can Win
1. Talking about teams not fans. Preller accepted his 30 day ban.
2. Actually other teams fan base brings up “nobody will trade with preller” narrative on a regular basis, despite trades already done. So, we’d like to drop it. But long as other fans bring it up its hard to.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
As MathTeacherSDSUAlumni619 said, we as Padres fans got over it long ago. It’s other team’s fans that haven’t gotten over it. ghostoforsillo’s comment a little up this page came before mine.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
No history made up here. They did indeed go crying to MLB about Pomeranz’s medicals even tho he never went on the DL or missed a start for the Sox in 2016 and the prospect they gave up for him probably needs Tommy John surgery.
BSPORT
Bloody sock was real? No lies there
InPolesWeTrust
Haha, this is great. I took a cheap shot at the GM because it was on a tee. Didn’t realize it would spark off some feelings….
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
I’m with purple
Tiger_diesel92
Boston trades for pitchers besides the name sale has been bust for them. Gave up way too much talent for arms that have not live up to expectations because of arm injuries. This comes from a yankee fan also baseball.
start_wearing_purple
My only problem with your analysis is that most people outside of Boston didn’t think Shaw would put up the numbers he has. Seriously, last October would you have said Shaw would be putting up the numbers he is now? Be honest.
sxh603
Melancin, bailey, smith and thornburg. Trading for middle relievers does not work for the sox
bleacherbum
Add Hanrahan and Bobby Jenks to that list as well.
Ken M.
People forget Brock Holt came over in the Hanrahan trade.
jdgoat
Even Kimbrel hasn’t been as good as he was with Atlanta
jdgoat
Last year at least anyways
Ken M.
Huge bust.
vinscully16
I agree with JD, Kimbrel makes me nervous (Jeff Reardon all over again).
MafiaBass
Don’t forget Eric Gagne, Brendan Donnely, and J C Romero. Crazy that all three of them didn’t do what they were traded for to do and the Sox still won it all in 07.
dlevin11
They did trade for Hembree and Kelly but overall not what Sox do best
supersox
Not the first time sox butchered it. Won’t be the last time either
madmc44
The good and bad thing about DD is he’s not gun shy –he keeps going back to the minor league “well” looking for the veteran “diamond” that gets the Sox to the next level.
Picking up Harvey, Sonny, Quintana and/or Frazier might help–this season.
Pomerantz, Kelly, Owens and Johnson in addition to Holt, Barnes and some of their good young Minor League arms might get some rotation help.
Carson Smith might be back by July 1–Thornberg next season.
In the Thorny trade I liked Dubon–he was a nice multi talented player.
vinscully16
Travis Shaw is doing what he did last year. Once the book is out on Shaw, his second half won’t be nearly as good as his first. I don’t miss Shaw, I still don’t think he’s an every day player, what we’re seeing is the benefits of switching leagues – NL pitchers will figure out Shaw.
Ken M.
You don’t miss those “Oh well… I stuck out” walk back to the dugouts?
vinscully16
… exactly.
padreforlife
Janko stinks so really not big deal
