“Votto sought out players such as Joey Votto, Carlos Beltran, Eric Hosmer and Danny Valencia, among others, in an effort to gain as much information and input on his swing as possible. ”
I think you mean Alonso sought out…….
Kayrall
I hope for the A’s limited financial capability’s sake that they are super skeptical going into any contract extension talks with him.
woodhead1986
the only reason i would ask eric hosmer about my swing is to find out what NOT to do.
GareBear
He’s roughly league average. He’s too streaky and inconsistent. But honestly, he’s not a bad role player. Not every team has a Goldschmidt or Freeman so I will take the solid if unspectacular production he provides.
arc89
How the Yanks have such a big whole at first I wouldn’t be surprised if they offer a prospect like Fowler for him.
bronxbombers
I would sure hope not

Don’t hold your breath!
pro4pro32goathletics
More likely Alonso will go together with Sonny Gray for something like Frazier, Fowler and Acevedo, the Yankees have Judge, Hicks, Gardner and Ellsbury for now and they are saving money for either Harper or Trout, so I think they would like to trade their outfield prospects for proven MLB guys.
mnsports
Trout won’t leave LA unless he’s traded
pro4pro32goathletics
But as an A’s fan I’d like to see a trade Alonso for Fowler, last year we couldn’t extend Josh Reddick, so I don’t think it will happen with Yonder. Then we get Fowler and trade Gray somewhere else.
Cheeseball
think Brandon Belt

A lot of players want to do well and then get out? It seems to be the trend but it would still suck for A’s fans to hear that
woodhead1986
all 12 of them must be devastated. they gotta move that team.
Asfan27
Nah I’m good. And it doesn’t bother the other 11 either.
Rooted in Oakland!
bbatardo
I wonder what he is worth or what type of contract he is looking for? If I was the A’s I’d probably only want to do like 4-36 + team option and buyout to make it closer to 40 mill. I am sure Alonso wants more than that.
A'sfaninUK
2nd best hitter in the AL isn’t settling for $9M a year.
I’d do 4/70 if I was Oakland.
bronxbombers
4/70 there’s no way Oakland does that
GareBear
But that’s without a track record of success. Ask the Braves about how Chris Johnson’s one amazing season and ensuing contract extension worked. Obviously the two are not the same but he will have to settle if he wants to stay in Oakland.
A'sfaninUK
Would be a bigger help to Oakland if he was traded at the deadline, then re-signed in the offseason.
If you don’t count Trout, who no longer has enough PA’s to qualify, Alonso has the 2nd best OPS in the AL right now, he’s not a fluke.
bobtillman
Alonzo seems to be the kind of guy who comes alive only in contract years. A’s should move him ASAP; the deal with the Yanks (for Fowler) seems pretty fair.
julyn82001
Well, they got Olson too and he is tearing it at the AAA level so even if Alonso were to leave – hope he stays – the A’s have good, valid options still…
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
That would be stupid. He’ll make way more money if he’s able to negotiate with all 30 teams than if he limits the market to just one, even if he would prefer to stay in Oakland.
arc89
The A’s can offer a 1 year deal for him QO. That would hurt his free agent offers.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Even with that in mind he’ll still get more money by waiting out free agency. Whatever the A’s offer him now is basically the floor for what he’ll get. There is simply no good reason for any player to forego free agency when they’ve already made it this far.
Mattimeo09
It’s not always about the money. For most players the money is the bottom line, but it sounds like Alonso truly wants to stay in Oakland. And if he’s happy accepting a 3yr/30mil contract then that’s great for both sides.
If I were the A’s I wouldn’t go any higher than that.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Even if he wants to stay in Oakland they’ll still have to offer him more money if he’s a free agent and there are other teams driving up the price. Entering free agency is a no-lose proposition for Alonso.
Mattimeo09
Did you see what happened to most of the 1B last offseason? Most of them ended up having to settle for much less than expected since there wasn’t any real demand.
Has anything really changed in a year?
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
If he enters free agency worst case scenario he re-signs with the A’s for whatever they are offering him now, best case scenario someone else overpays or the A’s are forced to offer more money because there are other teams bidding on Alonso. There is no way he makes less in free agency than he would by taking an extension.
Priggs89
Mutal interest, meaning:
-Alonso is interested in staying if Oakland pays him a ton of money
-Oakland is interested in keeping him if he signs for cheap
hartman85
Why not do what the Yankees did with Chapman— trade him and then sign him back in 3 months…. these players should realize what something like that can do for the organization that won’t win this year anyway.
padresfan
No one wants or needs him
A'sfaninUK
No one wants the #2 OPS in the AL? Try again. He’s an upgrade over every single 1B in the game.
bronxbombers
Until he gets off of his fluky start and returns to his career numbers
bronxbombers
I don’t think a gm will give much for a rental player who over 5+ years has barely played well enough to have a roster spot and almost got non tendered just 4 months ago. 3 good months is pretty much all he’s had in his career
Priggs89
Paul Goldschmidt and Joey Votto say hi…
Codeeg
I hate being a buzzkill, but wording percent and percentage incorrectly is kinda misleading and annoys me at times.
his FB rate (%) for his career is 34% and this year it’s 51.4%. That’s 150 “percent” better than his career average, and ~18 “percentage points” better than his career average.
Mattimeo09
Apparently you don’t hate it enough to stop doing it. No offense
rbisingle
Not capitalizing the first word of a sentence annoys me 100 percentage of the time. Get over it.
A'sfaninUK
Trade him and Madson for the Yanks for Fowler, re-sign him in the offseason for 4/50…profit?
bronxbombers
In my opinion the Yankees would rather move headley to first and “inject youth” into the second half with gleyber at 3rd who is hitting over .300 at AAA right now as long as his injury isn’t too serious
Priggs89
There goes that plan.
Solaris611
That makes the most sense for the A’s. I’m sure Alonso’s agent will take the angle that an extension will be more affordable for OAK than re-signing him as a FA. Beane is not that naive. Next winter’s FA market promises to be similar to last year’s. Get a solid prospect for Alonso now, and then wait out the FA market and bring back Alonso at a realistic salary.
rycm131
Oh god no
edreed20
How about a straight up trade for Chris KKKarter
