It’s very doubtful that Suarez shifts to SS. It’s more likely that Peraza shifts to SS and Dilson Herrera takes over at 2B with Suarez dealt when Senzel is ready.
ReverieDays
Herrera isn’t very good.
redthought
I can’t disagree with you and it makes me sad.
PLAYTOWIN
That would be a mistake by the Reds. Suarez can play the infield positions plus the outfield.

not sure surefire sellers is the right term…like cozart and maybe storen. hard to see them fetching much.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
They have to trade them. The alternative is to let them walk for nothing.
padresfan
Yup and then the padres pick up
BlueSkyLA
They have to try, but that doesn’t mean anybody is willing to give up much. Cozart, maybe, but the buyer would have to believe he is having a breakout year at age 31. A tough sell on a good day.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Well if no one is willing to give up much they still have to take it. Whoever that is, they have a better chance of helping the Reds down the road than Cozart or Store because they’ll be gone.
And I don’t think potential buyers are worried if Cozart can sustain this kind of production beyond this season. It only matters to them for this season.
BlueSkyLA
Not disagreeing with your basic point, just adding the suspicion that the market for Cozart might not be improved much by his offensive output over the last couple of months. Buyers are going to look at him as a player currently on a hot streak that could end at any time.

Ammiel, you drunk? Surefire sellers is the right term. There is a zero percent chance this team goes to the playoffs. Why? They aren’t trying to. They want to rebuild to have a team that lasts. Not build a Oakland team where you keep rebuying your team every year.
ammiel
not on a monday beauvandertulip! my point was even if they attempt to sell off the pieces deemed feasible by the author, with Cozart and Storen being the most prominent, they are unlikely to feature heavily among the teams to have bolstered their farms much. As the majority of their roster are longterm controllable assets, the most they can hope for is like 1 decent prospect and some and lottery ticket types for Cozart, and not much at all for nearly all of the other rentals.

Ammiel, even your last statement qualifies the Reds as sure fire sellers. The fact that the Reds might not receive much in return in no way diminishes the fact that they are trying to sell resources.
Think about it this way, someone who sells one banana is just as much a seller as someone who sells one diamond. They both qualify as sellers because of the process of selling and NOT the price that was received. Not everyone can sell diamonds.
Right now I don’t see the Reds working out a deal to receive a bunch of top tier prospects, but they could probably net a decent one (someone not in the mlb top 100 or so) for Cozart. A lot will depend on major injuries on contenders over the next few weeks. Right now it doesn’t look like anyone is desperate enough to pay top price.

How do u reds fans think of Dilson Herrera? I know he was a big prospect for the Mets and after Bruce’s terrible first impression with the Mets last year, New York was up in arms trading away Herrera for Bruce. Just curious your thoughts on him and the Bruce trade so far from a Cincinnati point of view.
gocincy
He cannot hit. He’s destined to backup the Suarez-Peraza double play combo.

I’m loving these “Taking Inventory” articles. Is MLBTR considering articles from buyers perspective? Like who needs what positions, what they would be willing to give up, what player might be a good fit? I think that would be really interesting too

A lot of people (myself included) really criticized the Reds a few years ago when they traded Frazier and some of those other guys and seemingly botched their rebuild, but this team has some really interesting pieces to build around and things look pretty good for them other than the fact that the NL Central is gonna be brutally competitive for the next several years

The pitching is worrisome. The young hitters look promising, but Disco is the only young arm who looks good and he’s always hurt. Finnegan may yet impress me, but the others need a lot of development. And our track record for pitcher development is weak.
