AL News & Rumors: G. Richards, BoSox, Twins, Cruz, Angels, Astros

By Connor Byrne | January 22, 2021 at 8:15pm CDT

The Red Sox and free-agent right-hander Garrett Richards “are in active discussions,” Jon Morosi of MLB.com writes. However, there has been more than one team talking with Richards as of Friday, Morosi adds. The starter-needy Red Sox were rumored to be pursuing Richards as of a week ago. Richards was once at the front end of the Angels’ rotation, but a series of injuries limited him from 2016-19. The 32-year-old stayed healthy and produced decent results with the Padres last season, though, throwing 51 1/3 innings of 4.03 ERA/4.55 SIERA ball and averaging 95 mph on his fastball. [UPDATE: Talks between the Red Sox and Richards “are active and evolving,” according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.]

  • The Twins have increased the value of their one-year offer to free-agent designated hitter Nelson Cruz, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets, though Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News reports that actually happened earlier in the offseason. Cruz was looking for a two-year contract at the beginning of the winter, but even for someone who’s as dominant as he is at the plate, that could be difficult to obtain for a 40-year-old. Of course, with no official announcement on whether the universal DH will remain in place in 2021, Cruz probably isn’t in a hurry to sign anywhere.
  • The Angels are “very active” in their pursuit of starting pitching, general manager Perry Minasian told Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic and other reporters Friday. While Minasian did sign veteran left-hander Jose Quintana to a one-year, $8MM contract this week, adding him to a group led by Dylan Bundy, Andrew Heaney, Griffin Canning and perhaps Shohei Ohtani, there still appears to be room for improvement. In light of Minasian’s comment, it’s worth noting that the Angels reportedly remain in the mix for two of the best starters on the market in Trevor Bauer and Jake Odorizzi.
  • Speaking with reporters Friday, Astros GM James Click suggested the team doesn’t expect to be that aggressive for the rest of the offseason, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com tweets. The Astros agreed to re-sign outfielder Michael Brantley and reunited with catcher Jason Castro this week, but their roster took a hit with the loss of outfielder George Springer to the Blue Jays. Otherwise, the bullpen has come up as a potential area of the need for the team (it did address it by signing Ryne Stanek and Pedro Baez in free agency), but the Astros don’t necessarily feel a sense of urgency to address it further. It’s possible they will enter 2021 without someone who has extensive experience as a closer, per Click (via McTaggart).

I think Richards is a solid enough option for the Red Sox to sign. Personally I think if rather them ago after Tajuan Walker but Richards might be cheaper and has similar upside, in that, if he plays up to his full potential the Sox could be getting themselves a solid #3 SP with an ERA around 3.50 or so. Of course it’s also possible that he’ll wind up more in the 4.00+ ERA range which, assuming he stays healthy, is still solid enough to eat innings. But I think he’s a good fit for them because if he does pitch to his full ability it gives them a really solid front-end SP, something they could definitely use especially as Sale won’t be ready until probably sometime around the AS break.

A pitcher like Richards is only useful if he’s one of many. He hasn’t given any volume in a season since 2015, with a high-water mark of 76 innings in 2018, The Red Sox need arms that can given volume. Richards isn’t that, but if he’s paired up with a couple other pitchers like that then they can try to piece together innings.

Inconsistency and piecing together innings won’t help us. It works for the Rays because they plan for it from the start but look how that turned out in the World Series… the Sox aren’t in the same scenario.

The Red Sox do already have 5 SPs though and 6 if you count Sale. So if you add a healthy Richards to that mix he might not be as durable as some of the other options BUT I think he might give you better quality than some of the others. So if you go into it planning on Richards supplying say 3.50-3.75 ERA ball but maybe only for 140 innings or so… that’s still a good number of games that, with their offense, they should have a decent chance of winning. Of course all of this is based off the premise that he is actually healthy as the report says. As far as referencing the past several years that’s not really fair as his injury issues for the past few years are well known and the point now is that he’s saying he is finally healthy again. Ans last year… he was in fact healthy. He only pitched 50 something innings but not because of health issues… it was because of Covid. So if you take his camps word that hes fully healthy now… you have to assume he can give you more innings next season than during the years where he was suffering through several injuries. Do I know for sure he’s actually fully healthy? … No… but all we have to go off of is his camps word so at face value and based on that he looked healthy (throwing 95 MPH) last season… that’s what the Sox would hope for should they sign him for 2021.

I’d rather throw equal money back at porcello.

Advantages rick: he’s durable; he’s got 200 IP capability; 2020 he threw a low 3.xx FIP with a horrible Mets defense behind him; he’s used to the Boston pressure cooker; the catching staff is used to him and there some repore.

Disadvantages Richards: he hasn’t been healthy since 2015, and 2020 was so short it can’t be used to judge durability; you can’t count on many innings, and he’d need years to stretch back out; his last results and FIP are uninspiring; not used to Boston; no meaningful relationship with the existing staff.

Rick used to be willing to take a Boston discount. Maybe he still will

I wouldn’t want Porcello in the rotation even if he was free. His last season in Boston there were games where he was literally as bad as if he were just throwing batting practice. You might be able to convince me that Richards isn’t the answer but under no circumstances could I be convinced that Porcello is!!!

Jeff, for all the reasons you mention, I would like for Garrett to reunite with his buddy Mike Trout in LA.

Trade for a controllable TOR SP and add a late inning RP and the Angels will be set.

What TOR SP would you want? Outside of Ryu who they definitely aren’t trading all of their other starters had really rough seasons last year. And also the Blie Jay’s aren’t exactly seller’s so why/who would you be targeting from them and what would you be giving them to motivate them to trade one of their starters?

Bauer and Odorizzi…. seems like one is a realistic possibility given their obvious trend and the other is an “interest.” Either way, if they pay big for Bauer, I think they will regret it. He isn’t nearly as good as the current market would have one believe. The best this year in FA? Yes. Worth what he’s asking? Nope.

Agreed. 2 great season and several mediocre journeyman type season. Which bauer are you paying 36 million for? That’s not even factoring in his potential cancerous personality and all the quirks that come with him. Angels being forced to shell out for a loon is a symbol of pure desperation. The team with the best player in the world slowly letting him die on the vine, Sad really.

Except that’s not actually true at all lolololo

          Career 3.9 era

          2012 – 2017,19’

Era averaged out to a 4.5
          With and era+ of 97
Fip also inline with his era around a 4.5

2018 and 2020 are the only season in which he finished with an era+ of 196 and 276

Above average would imply above a 100 era+ which he only did in 4 season 2 of which were just barely average. So which bauer are you getting?

No one cares about his career ERA what someone did five and six years ago is irrelevant.

Do you believe what he did for Cleveland in 2018 and 2019. And for the Reds in 2020, or do you believe what he did for the Reds in 2019.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I know anyone who looks at career ERA is looking in the wrong place.

Agreed. I think the Central was weak last year. Look at the numbers for pitchers there. Maeda looked like a Cy Young candidate, for example.

Between the competition and the line tar (allegedly) his numbers aren’t real. I don’t mind paying him to be the durable 2/3 with potentially a breakout year here abs there, but not like an expected ace.

Y’all need to stop it with the hate on Trevor Bauer for his pine tar usage. I have seen so much hate over his cy young campaign last year because it wasn’t “real” because he was using a special substance. If you want to hate on him because of the weak division or the small season, that’s fine, but not for the pine tar. Every single effective pitcher in baseball uses it, including guys like Verlander, Cole, and Scherzer. I didn’t see anyone criticize Cole for using pine tar when he was a free agent, so everyone needs to stop going after Bauer.

I get it is a part of the game, but will MLB crack down on it? Did Bauer do it to prove a point? The real question is will he keep doing it over the length of his next contract?

All I’m saying is his value is obviously increased due to a foreign substance. One that he might not be able to use a year from now. That presents risk

I understand why you might be afraid that his production will drop if MLB does something about the pine tar. However, I wonder if you feel this way about other pitchers in MLB? Gerrit Cole has been proven to use a special substance, yet the Yankees still made him the highest paid pitcher in baseball history. If you want to argue that a Bauer contract might be bad, then you need to apply this same standard to the rest of MLB.

It is also important to note that Bauer had a lot of success in 2018 and the first half of 2019, when he was not cheating. It’s not like he has never had success without using a substance.

It’s not “cheating” if everyone is doing it. The last person actually punished for it was Astros AA prospect, Tyler Ivey in 2019. And oh by the way, Bauer absolutely used substances in 2019 because he admitted he did it as an experiment [see fangraphs article].

The reason Managers don’t call attention to umpires: their own pitchers use it, and hitters rationalize that it helps pitcher’s grip so they have some control with a 100 mph weapon in their hands.

Who cares about hype over whether Bauer deserves this/that? He’s worth what someone will pay.

Yeah I have to agree on Bauer. I mean his season last year was amazing. And if he had pit together like 3 or 4 years on a row like that I wouldn’t even have to think twice about giving him whatever he’s looking for. The problem with him is that he had a great 2018 then a completely mediocre 2019 and then a fantastic, albeit abbreviated 2020. So which Bauer are you getting? The guy who tends to average a 4.00-ish ERA or the guy who looks like the greatest SP on earth from 2020? If I was a team that was maybe 1 SP away from competing for a WS title I might gamble on a 1 year massive $ deal in hopes that he repeats his 2020 performance. But if we’re talking a 5+ year deal I’d be really hesitant to be doling out $30M+ annually. I realize all signs point to that his 2020 wasn’t a fluke and the underlying numbers indicate he really was as good as his stats show… its just that like you said outside of 2018 and 2020 his other seasons have really only ever been mediocre. So while there’s a good chance he’ll continue to be the dominant sub 2.00 ERA guy from 2020… I feel like there’s also a decent chance he’ll wind up being the low 4.00s mediocre guy instead. Idk it’s a tough situation to evaluate because of how dramatically 2018 and 2020 stick out from the rest of his career. Like the guy in those 2 seasons is worth $30M+ without question… but how do you know thats the guy you’re going to get?

I agree MM, although it is unpopular to even mention “Adell” and “trade” in the same sentence. We are trying to win now. To do that we need pitching now. Adell doesn’t pitch and he won’t be ready to contribute at the major league level for a year or more. I also personally believe he has been overhyped and may disappoint expectations. Trade him now for pitching. We would get more for him now than later if he proves to not be the superstar as projected.

Honestly, it would have to be a crazy package. Castillo has 3 years of team control and he probably projects to be a 4 WAR pitcher or better per 200 innings over the next 3 years. His surplus value is in the 100-120 range. That means the Angels would have to give up both Adell and Marsh as well as Detmers and Rodriguez. Knowing Arte, he’d probably be happy to take on Votto’s contract to offset Castillo though, in which case you could get away with just giving the Reds Marsh.

The Reds trading Votto, who is loved there, as a toss in so they can trade salary to get rid of Castillo would be bad. If they’re trading Castillo, they’re doing a rebuild, and any team talking to the Reds better bring multiple top 100 prospects with a couple toward the top. I don’t see him being traded, but it doesn’t hurt to float his name out there to see the response. If you’re blown away, you do a deal. If you’re not, you hold a great young arm.

Generally no, but young, stud, elite pitchers with years of control like Castro don’t come up for trade either. As great as he’s been, there’s also the potential of another gear there. He might immediately join Cole as the best starter in the AL. No disrespect to Bieber. I am a Bieber believer. Not sure he’ll ever repeat what he did last year in the shortened season (same with Bauer), especially as his pitching was restricted basically to the Central divisions.

The Rays and their money games, and extreme ability to identify talent, making them outliers. A 21-year-old Jesus Montero was a consensus top-10 prospect, rated as high as #3 by BA and BP, higher than Adell, who was traded for Michael Pineda, regarded as a lesser pitcher than Castillo.

I admire your support for Adell. Please note I haven’t said anything negative or even constructed a deal for Castillo. I’m just saying it’s going to be expensive. You’re fighting it like it won’t be. Reports had the Reds asking for Gleyber Torres for Castillo, and that was a legit ask. Torres is ranked by Fangraphs as the 8th most valuable player trade wise in the game today.

Since you’re an Angels fan, and I’m neither an Angels or Reds fan, meaning I have no horse in this race, why don’t you construct a realistic deal that would get the Reds attention. That might be a more interesting conversation. It’s not your love for Adell, which is deserved, it’s you seem to want to talk down Castillo, so seeing what you’d offer might give us more of an insight.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be expensive. It would be. I just wouldn’t trade Adell for him and I don’t think the Redds would take Adell for him.

          Time will tell.

Castillo would be ugly expensive. It would be costlier than Marsh AND Adel. There’s a reason why young, low cost, multi year controlled talents at Castillo’s level are almost never traded. One of the true unicorns in the world of baseball because these players are so valuable.

Castillio is still a pitcher who plays in a horrid division and had a combined ERA of 3.82 and a FIP of 3.99 his last two full season in the AL Central.

I wouldn’t trade six years of Adell for him straight up, not that the Reds would take Adell.

        No thank you on that.

A lot of fair points. Obviously I know it’d take more than just Adell to land Castillo or Marquez. Likely a combination of Adell + Fletcher or Adell + Detmers, Jones, Rodriguez. I’m also not very high on Adell. He has a very long swing and his defense looked horrendous. He might end up being a star or he might end up being a bust. Nobody really knows. I just think if the angels can land a young frontline #1 #2 it’s worth the risk.

He’s going to turn 33 in May and in the 45 games he was in from 2016-20, 41 of then were starts and he had high HR/9 and BB/9 rates. The bloom is off the rose.

All players don’t hit the floor running after TJ surgery. And he foolishly delayed his surgery by more than a year.

I’d gamble on Richards every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I think the Angels need to be in on Bauer, if they fall short than Odorizzi is a good back up option. Perry has the metrics, maybe he decides to trade for an upgrade like Castillo. In that case they would have to part with Adell. They could get a front line young pitcher for him

I mean if they went all in the could trade for Castillo (3 years of control) and sign bauer that’s a massive upgrade and puts them in contention with a’s and the slowly deflating astros

Fangraphs has the Angels sitting at 14th in pitching, Perry will still get a good starter and another relief pitcher. I like the idea of trading for Marquez or Castillo but at this point it looks like you will need to overpay for them. So Perry has Bauer who is the best option, but also is an overpay or you sign Odorizzi and hope he returns to 19 form, Any of these options will upgrade the pitching into the top ten if they add a good relief pitcher. Maybe Perry could make a deal with AA and the Braves. Trade Adell for Anderson or Wright

Three days ago the Angel needed three pitchers. I was hoping for two good relievers and one good starter.

They added one mediocre at best stater. I hope they don’t settle for mediocre on the other two.

By the way, if the Angels add Odorrizi, don’t expect him to get too far into the sixth. He implodes the 3rd time through the order. They’ll still need two more good RPs, and since they spent 8 million on Quintana, I don’t think they can afford to good RPs.

After what Anderson did for the Braves in a pinch in the regular season and then in the playoffs, there is just no way Anderson isn’t part of the Braves plans and own playoff hopes themselves. Wright might be more movable but he certainly doesn’t come with the kind of interest Anderson would have.

Are the Astros truly comfortable with Myles Straw as their centerfielder? I would think that they would want to bring in someone to at the very least compete with Straw for the starting job.

Richards tried to hold off TJ and lost the gamble. Other than TJ, he had a freak knee injury covering first. That’s it. So basically he is one of many pitchers who had TJ. I would not say that classifies him as injury prone. He will only get better as he continues to get innings in. I would like the Angels to look at him again for the right price.

Yeah. If the Angels think we can get 100 innings out of Ohtani then 100 out of Richards is a decent combo. Neither durable on their own, but combined a really nice boost.

Halo, since they added Quintana, they have Barria as a 7th starter and Sandoval as an 8th starter and Detmers, who is expected to be up this year, as a 9th starter. Detmers is not even on the man roster…. yet

Add Richards to that staff, I’d take my chances. The problem is that takes up spot 39 on the 40 man roster and the Angels still need at least one more RP.

Claudio rears his ugly head again.

Richards to Boston, I’d finally get a choice correct in the free agent contest…hooray!

It would actually be a good signing for them. He can slot in as #3 or #4 once Sale comes back. If Houck and Pivetta can hold their own, the Sox might have a better pitching staff than originally expected. So complete the Richards deal, then sign Colome for the BP. They can piece together the rest of that team from there.

As a Padres fan, I can tell you that Richards was actually pretty decent for us last year, and he was definitely better than the numbers indicate. His ERA and FIP were driven up by two consecutive bad starts in the middle of the season where he couldn’t get out of the first inning. Outside of those two starts, he was a pretty good number 3 for us. I am still disappointed that he didn’t get to start a playoff game. He will be a solid pickup for whichever team that signs him.

Here comes my crazy trade idea: Trade Tanner Houck, Connor Seabold, Jeter Downs and Andrew Bennintendi to the Cincinnati Reds for Luis Castillo, Amir Garrett and Nick Castellanos. Red Sox get a TOR starter, a good BP arm and an offensive minded OF who has his struggles defensively and gives CIN salary relief. Cincy cuts payroll, gets 2 really good major league ready young pitchers, a Top 50 IF prospect in Downs who they should be very familiar with and get a better, cost controlled LF to help them round out their team. Happy to swap out Seabold for Pivetta, Ward or even Groome; I just don’t want to see them give up Mata. Not sure if this would be a enough to pry Castillo away but it would be a decent haul for Cincy and allow them to move that big Nick C. contract as well.

Boston has Kike to play 2B for now and Hudson Potts almost ready as well. Nick Yorke should be their long term plan at 2B.

If you swap out Sonny Gray for Luis Castillo, I could see this trade happening. I would be shocked if the Reds couldn’t get a better package than this for Castillo and Garrett. I think the Castillo package will be similar, and could possibly be even better than the package the Rays received for Blake Snell.

I think Castillo for 3 years is overrated, especially when you add Houck on the other side given both his debut but more importantly effectiveness and poise thrown against NYY.

Since Sale will be stuck around a long time on his contract, erod is hitting FA, and the price of pitching you NEED cost controlled prearb and early arm effective pitching. Boston. Is missing enough of that you need to keep what they have.

Now, you want to trade the likes of pivetta/downs/benny/renfroe off over the season for young mlb-ready pitching or guys who have 1yr or less service time? That sounds good.

Well, looks like I better tell Direct TV not to renew my XTRA Innings subscription this year, looks like we’re giving up already. Leaves more questions than he does answers, hope he stays healthy. But “c’mon man” Richards, at best, maybe #4 but a true #5 guy similar to another guy we signed to a 4 year deal 2 years ago. John Henry and co should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. You can’t be mad at and blame Dombrowski, the guy did exactly what he does to just about every organization he has ever been with. (See the Tigers current rebuild efforts) And as far as Sam Horn, you don’t fix the farm system when you miss on draft picks, every, single, year. The Red Sox get lucky with draft picks here & there. But, due to their market, fan base, and aggressive nature, they are now and always will be a team that relies on free agency. It’s truly pitiful that we are now trying to run like the Rays organization. You compete in sports, that’s the entire point of playing. Kinda wondering if Henry’s wife is planning on moving the team to somewhere warmer, and maybe we have a former 3B, Shea or Youk are trying to buy the team from her control. I swear this situation rings a bell, just can’t put my finger on it…

Twins fan here. I’m less and less interested in Cruz. Don’t want to pay for his decline and am significantly more interested in pursuing one of Simmons or Didi and using the DH role to rest guys. Don’t love seeing them increase the price on the deal either – who are they bidding against? Can’t they basically get him for 1 year $10 mill if the NL doesn’t have the DH? What AL team is there?

Still love Cruz. Just think there’s better options
